Position Summary
The Industrial Hygienist will support a broad range of occupational health, safety, and mission-support activities across NASA Armstong Flight Research Center facilities.
Core Responsibilities
- Conducting industrial hygiene audits and field assessments in NASA laboratories, shops, test areas, and support facilities.
- Performing qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments for chemical, biological, and physical agents.
- Reviewing chemical, material, and equipment purchases before use to anticipate potential health hazards and recommend appropriate controls.
- Performing air and surface sampling for a variety of occupational exposure concerns.
- Conducting asbestos and lead paint assessments and sampling, including bulk material sampling, air monitoring, and documentation support in accordance with applicable regulatory and program requirements.
- Operating, calibrating, maintaining, and troubleshooting industrial hygiene sampling equipment.
- Conducting indoor air quality evaluations.
- Performing noise surveys and personal noise dosimetry.
- Supporting the respiratory protection program, including annual fit testing and respirator user training.
- Developing and delivering employee safety and health training.
- Responding to employee health and safety concerns.
- Supporting injury, incident, and mishap investigations.
- Performing ergonomic assessments in office, laboratory, and industrial environments and recommending corrective or preventive controls.
- Conducting confined space evaluations and supporting hazard assessments.
- Documenting findings clearly and professionally using Microsoft Office and IH data management tools.
- Evaluating/certifying local exhaust ventilation systems including fume hoods/extractors
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, science, engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Approximately 3–5 years of relevant experience preferred; however, an entry-level candidate with the right technical background, attitude, and growth potential may be considered.
- Working knowledge of occupational safety and health standards, regulations, and best practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and general computer applications.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, shift direction as workload changes, and work with minimal oversight.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with industrial hygiene sampling, exposure assessments, noise surveys, respiratory protection, ergonomics, indoor air quality, asbestos sampling, or confined space evaluations.
- Experience working in laboratory, research, aerospace, manufacturing, government, or technical facility environments.
- Familiarity with industrial hygiene data management systems.
- Interest in pursuing professional certification, including CIH, CSP, or related credentials.
