The University and Employment Preparation Department at Thompson Rivers University invites applications for a sessional faculty member to teach the following Adult Basic Education courses (including labs) in Kamloops Fall 2026: Chemistry 0500-03 and Chemistry 0600-01.
Chemistry 0500 course is designed for those students who have taken no previous high school chemistry course but who now require the equivalent of Chemistry 11 for entry into a certain program or course. Topics covered include chemical arithmetic, chemical nomenclature, chemical formula calculations, energy, solutions, atomic theory, chemical bonding, acids and bases, and physical properties. The laboratory reinforces concepts introduced in the lectures.
Chemistry 0600 is a pre-university level course for students requiring the equivalent of Chemistry 12. Topics covered include gas laws, reaction kinetics, chemical equilibrium, solubility of ionic substances, acids and bases, oxidation-reduction and organic chemistry. The laboratory reinforces concepts introduced in the lecture as well as safe laboratory practices and laboratory skills.
• Master's degree in a relevant field (required)
• At least one degree in science in a relevant field (required)
• Teaching Certificate or Instructor’s Diploma or 5 years teaching experience (required)
• Experience teaching students whose educational, social, and economic backgrounds are diverse, and for whom previous school experience may have been challenging (required)
• Experience teaching in a laboratory setting (required)
• Demonstrated evidence of scholarly teaching (required)
• Minimum of 5 years teaching experience in ABE science courses (preferred)
• Skills in building intercultural understanding, empathy and mutual respect (TRC CA 63) (preferred)
• Experience integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62) (preferred)
• Teaching excellence including developing culturally appropriate curricula (TRC CA 10) (preferred)
