Job Description

Position Summary

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for managing a caseload of students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Section 504 Plans. This position provides direct and indirect instructional services, ensures compliance with all special education requirements, collaborates with general education teachers and families, and supports students in achieving their academic, behavioral, social, and functional goals.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Provide direct and indirect special education services as outlined in students' IEPs and Section 504 Plans.
  • Develop and deliver individualized instruction that addresses students' academic, behavioral, communication, and functional needs.
  • Utilize evidence-based instructional strategies, including multisensory learning, explicit instruction, repetition, and differentiated teaching practices.
  • Establish clear instructional objectives and communicate learning goals to students.
  • Maintain a structured, positive learning environment by implementing the school's behavior management system with fidelity.
  • Monitor student progress toward IEP goals through ongoing data collection and progress monitoring.
  • Maintain accurate and timely service logs, lesson plans, progress monitoring data, and all required documentation in accordance with federal and state regulations.
  • Serve as the case manager for assigned students, ensuring compliance with all special education timelines and requirements.
  • Prepare and present IEPs, attend annual review meetings, reevaluations, and other required special education meetings.
  • Complete quarterly progress reports for students receiving special education services.
  • Collaborate regularly with classroom teachers, related service providers, school psychologists, counselors, administrators, and families to support student success.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and weekly grade-level or student support meetings.
  • Assist with the administration of state and district assessments, including providing approved testing accommodations.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, services, and educational programming.
  • Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, and curriculum planning activities.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the Assistant Director or Leadership Team, including student supervision and other school-wide responsibilities.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a closely related field required.
  • Massachusetts licensure in Moderate Disabilities (PreK–8 or 5–12, as appropriate) or eligibility for licensure.
  • SEI Endorsement required (or ability to obtain as required by Massachusetts).
  • Strong knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, IEP development, and special education regulations.
  • Experience writing IEPs, monitoring student progress, and maintaining compliance documentation.
  • Strong classroom management, collaboration, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Commitment to inclusive practices, high academic expectations, and student-centered instruction.
  • Successful completion of applicable Massachusetts MTEL requirements within one year of employment.
