Job Description
Position Summary
The Middle School Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction, academic support, and behavioral interventions for students with disabilities in grades 6–8. The ESE Teacher collaborates with general education teachers, administrators, parents, and support staff to ensure students receive appropriate services, accommodations, and support in accordance with their Individual Education Plans (IEPs). Certified and qualified non-certified candidates who are passionate about helping students achieve academic success are encouraged to apply.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Develop, implement, and monitor Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for assigned students.
Provide direct instructional support to students with disabilities in resource, inclusion, self-contained, or support facilitation settings.
Modify and adapt curriculum, assignments, and assessments based on student needs and accommodations.
Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure appropriate classroom accommodations and instructional support.
Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals and objectives.
Conduct academic and behavioral assessments as needed.
Implement behavior intervention plans and positive behavior support strategies.
Maintain accurate student records and ensure compliance with all state and federal ESE regulations.
Participate in IEP meetings, staffing meetings, parent conferences, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
Utilize data-driven instructional practices to improve student achievement.
Support students with executive functioning, organization, study skills, and self-advocacy.
Create and maintain a safe, supportive, and structured learning environment.
Communicate effectively with students, parents, administrators, and colleagues.
Participate in professional development and training related to special education and instructional practices.
Perform other duties as assigned by school administration.
Qualifications
Certified Candidates
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
Valid Florida Teaching Certificate in Exceptional Student Education (ESE), Special Education, or related certification area.
Non-Certified Candidates
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
Degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Human Services, Child Development, or a related field preferred.
Experience working with students with disabilities preferred.
Willingness and ability to obtain Florida ESE certification within the required timeframe.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with middle school students (Grades 6–8).
Experience supporting students with:
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD)
Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities (EBD)
Other Health Impairments (OHI)
Intellectual Disabilities (IND)
Experience developing and managing IEPs.
Strong classroom management and behavior intervention skills.
Experience in inclusion, resource, self-contained, or support facilitation environments.
Knowledge of Florida ESE compliance requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, and Florida ESE regulations.
Ability to develop and implement effective IEP goals and accommodations.
Understanding of adolescent development and middle school learning needs.
Ability to provide differentiated instruction and targeted interventions.
Strong behavior management and de-escalation skills.
Ability to analyze student performance data and develop intervention plans.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, families, and support personnel.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
