Job Description

Circulation Manager

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Circulation Manager based in Canada.

This role offers the opportunity to lead the circulation and audience growth strategy for a large consumer-focused publication. You will oversee both print and digital circulation, with direct responsibility for subscriber acquisition, retention, renewal performance and revenue growth. The position combines strategic planning with hands-on campaign execution, using audience data to improve engagement and lifetime customer value. You will manage the full subscriber lifecycle while optimizing circulation economics, fulfillment and distribution operations. Working cross-functionally with editorial, sales, product, analytics and marketing teams, you will help shape broader audience and revenue initiatives. This is a high-impact opportunity for an experienced circulation or audience development professional who thrives in a data-driven, remote environment.

Accountabilities:

You will own the end-to-end circulation strategy, balancing audience growth, subscriber experience, revenue performance and operational efficiency. Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead print and digital circulation strategy, including subscriber acquisition, retention, renewals, circulation growth and audience engagement.
  • Develop audience growth strategies that increase paid and qualified circulation, improve subscriber lifetime value, reduce churn and strengthen profitability.
  • Analyze audience, subscription and engagement data to guide acquisition, conversion, retention and revenue decisions.
  • Plan and execute subscriber acquisition, renewal, win-back and retention campaigns using segmentation, behavioral targeting and personalization.
  • Build and optimize subscriber lifecycle programs covering conversion, onboarding, engagement, renewal, reactivation and long-term retention.
  • Develop test plans, trial offers, pricing strategies and promotional packages, using A/B testing and continuous optimization to improve response rates, retention and ROI.
  • Monitor key metrics including subscriber growth, renewal rates, churn, engagement, customer acquisition cost, lifetime value, conversion and subscription revenue.
  • Manage subscription revenue performance, circulation economics, forecasting, profitability analysis and operational efficiency initiatives.
  • Prepare annual circulation forecasts, budgets, reporting and performance analyses, presenting actionable recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Oversee print circulation operations, including fulfillment, production schedules, print orders, subscriber services, shipping, postal optimization and newsstand distribution.
  • Manage relationships with fulfillment providers, printers, direct mail agencies, distribution partners, digital marketing providers and other third-party suppliers.
  • Ensure compliance with circulation reporting requirements, privacy regulations, subscription policies and postal regulations while maintaining accurate subscriber data.
  • Conduct competitive analysis and market research to identify audience trends, emerging technologies, subscription practices and new growth opportunities.
  • Monitor email deliverability and optimize subscriber communications to improve inbox placement, engagement, retention and conversion.
  • Develop integrated audience development initiatives across print, digital, email, social media, events, newsletters and advertiser-supported programs.
  • Collaborate closely with editorial, sales, product, analytics and marketing teams to align audience initiatives with broader content, business and revenue objectives.
  • Apply advanced segmentation, cohort analysis, retention modeling and performance reporting to identify opportunities and improve subscriber experiences.
  • Evaluate new channels, technologies, partnerships and marketing opportunities to expand reach and strengthen long-term customer relationships.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate combines strong circulation or audience development expertise with an analytical, commercially focused approach to growth. You should be comfortable managing multiple campaigns and stakeholders while working independently in a fast-paced remote environment.

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Marketing, Communications, Business or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in circulation management, audience development or digital/print marketing, ideally within media, publishing, B2B or B2C environments.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate audience and subscription data into actionable growth strategies.
  • Excellent communication, organization and project management skills.
  • Expert working knowledge of subscription fulfillment platforms such as Omeda or CDS.
  • Experience with email marketing platforms, list segmentation and subscriber lifecycle communications.
  • Experience with web analytics platforms such as Google Analytics or Adobe Analytics and data visualization tools.
  • Hands-on experience managing social media channels and applying audience growth tactics.
  • Direct experience executing and managing paid advertising initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of A/B testing, conversion rate optimization and disciplined test-and-learn methodologies.
  • Advanced understanding of print fulfillment workflows, subscriber databases, subscription billing cycles and postal regulations.
  • Ability to manage multiple brands, campaigns and priorities simultaneously.
  • Experience or knowledge within the scientific industry is an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail, strategic thinking and ability to demonstrate measurable ROI.

Benefits:

  • Annual salary of CAD 85,000–105,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Health and dental coverage.
  • Paid vacation.
  • Professional development support.
  • Fully remote position open to eligible candidates across Canada.
  • Preference may be given to candidates located in the Eastern or Central time zones.
  • Opportunity to lead high-impact circulation, audience growth and revenue initiatives within a publishing environment.
  • Inclusive workplace committed to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Reasonable accommodations available throughout the recruitment process for qualified candidates with disabilities.
