Job Description

ABOUT US:

Hallandale Pharmacy is a trusted, community-focused 503A compounding pharmacy dedicated to providing exceptional patient care, personalized medication solutions, and outstanding service. We collaborate with healthcare professionals nationwide to enhance patient well-being and adhere to rigorous USP standards to ensure safety, accuracy, and compliance in every prescription. We are a fast-growing organization entering an exciting phase of expansion. With increasing operational needs and evolving business goals, we are building our internal technology capabilities to support efficiency, scalability, and innovation.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Quality Control Level 1 also known as Visual Inspection Quality Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, purity, and quality of Compounded Sterile Preparations CSPs. Operating under strict compliance with USP 797, USP 1790, 21 CFR 211.25, and internal standard operating procedures, this individual is primarily responsible for performing 100% visual inspection of filled vials, containers, and lyophilized products. The specialist ensures that all released products meet rigid standards regarding particulate matter, volume accuracy, container-closure integrity, and general product quality before pharmacy release.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive visual inspections of compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) within the Quality Assurance unit utilizing specialized station equipment (light meter, black and white background, magnification, PPE).
  • Execute precise inspection techniques: hold and observe vials against black and white backgrounds for designated intervals (e.g., 3-second hold per background) under light intensities up to 8,000–10,000 lux.
  • Inspect vials for container-closure integrity (cracks, leaks, improper crimping/seals) and physical defects.
  • Inspect Capped vials throughout for any imperfections by turning the vial 360 degree to make sure the cap is sitting flat on a vial with no angle.
  • Identify foreign matter, inappropriate particulate matter, discoloration, precipitation, cloudiness, or volume discrepancies.
  • Utilize syringes (5–30 mL) to evaluate low/high volume discrepancies when accurate volume level is in question.
  • Inspect lyophilized (freeze-dried) products to ensure uniform appearance, porous cake structure, and absence of collapsed cakes.
  • Perform reconstitution visual inspection on designated sample sizes (e.g., 20 vials per 1,000-vial batch based on an AQL of 0.65%) using appropriate diluents (e.g., bacteriostatic water or bacteriostatic saline).
  • Evaluate reconstituted solutions for particulates, solubility, and clarity.
  • Report rejections to the Quality Manager to determine if expanded sampling or further investigation is required.
  • Segregate passing products from rejected units into designated "pass" and "fail" trays/totes to prevent cross-contamination or accidental release.
  • Maintain complete documentation of rejections within the batch folder.
  • Package rejected vials in labeled clear bags and submit them with the batch record for Quality Manager / Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) review.
  • Report visual inspection failures to the Pharmacy Manager or QC Manager to initiate Quality Related Event (QRE) records and root-cause investigations.
  • Ensure controlled substance rejections follow proper destruction logging procedures (SOP 1.046).
  • Adhere to mandatory rest breaks (e.g., eye break every 30 minutes) to minimize eye fatigue and preserve inspection accuracy.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, hygiene, PPE, material spill clean-up, and laboratory safety procedures
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant inspection workstation within the QA unit under dynamic operating conditions.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Successful completion and documentation of the Visual Inspection Video Training (Form 5.202.01) and didactic sterile training (SOP 2.101).
  • Excellent visual acuity (natural or corrected) with normal color perception to perform fine-detail particulate and defect detection against contrasting backgrounds.
  • Meticulous eye for detail to detect microscopic or minute particulates, seal anomalies, or subtle cosmetic defects.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with compounding technicians, QA/QC managers, and pharmacists, and know when to escalate inconclusive visual findings to supervisors.
  • High demand for eye focus; mandatory 30-minute eye rest breaks must be followed.
  • Cleanroom / QA laboratory environment. Must be comfortable wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
  • Prolonged sitting at inspection stations; manual dexterity to handle, swirl, and manipulate small glass vials continuously.
