About This Position
POSITION PURPOSE
This position is responsible for all trucking at Metromont, including product loads, bulk cement hauling, port to plant container delivery, incoming material, shuttling, equipment movement and any added haul types. The role is responsible for developing and implementing long-term strategies to ensure balanced capacity, risk reduction, financial performance, policy development and implementation. They will be responsible for continually developing and implementing best practices across Metromont sites to standardize operations wherever possible. The role will be responsible for continuing to drive a culture of safety through training and practices. The role will be responsible for equipment selection, life cycle tracking, maintenance, and budgets. The role will actively evaluate backlogs and identify opportunities to move resources and equipment to drive optimal utilization of internal fleets, while staying within budget for haul. The role will manage performance metrics to monitor and drive improvements where needed on an on-going basis. The role will manage, mentor and develop direct reports for their career growth.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own all trucking activity and strategies.
- Drive a culture of safety.
- Own DOT compliance – laws, procedures, records, tools and practices.
- Own trucking risk mitigation.
- Own Trucking safety program, continually building on current tools, training and programs.
- Drive companywide equipment and driver utilization, moving equipment and resources where needed.
- Own long term needs planning (people, equipment, training, processes, etc.).
- Own trucking financial performance, identifying areas of opportunity to meet or exceed budget.
- Direct report mentoring for career development.
- Develop/Own performance metrics.
- Regularly visit plant yards, jobsites and drop lots for monitoring performance.
- Support/Participate in quarterly driver meetings.
- Communicate regularly with stakeholders, including but not limited to Project Management, Plant and Erectors.
- Own outside haulers contracts; monitor performance, costs and driving improvements when needed.
- Own drop lot long term strategy in high repeat regions.
- Mentor direct reports for career growth.
- Evaluate, implement and drive best practices across systems and processes.
- Own trucking equipment strategies (trailers, trailer equipment, life cycle management, inspections, maintenance, etc.).
- Own trucking equipment specifications.
- Manage trucking equipment acquisitions and disposal.
- Develop minority, disadvantaged and veteran outbound hauling options based on region.
- Must adhere to all Metromont and OSHA safety rules and regulations.

CHARACTERISTICS (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Must have a track record of developing and growing a trucking organization, preferably in flatbed
- Must be able to work at both a strategic level and boots on the ground driving implementations
- Must have a solid understanding of governance around trucking – DOT and state requirements, load limitations, permitting, driver requirements, equipment mandates, etc.
- Ability to work under pressure
- Ability to multi-task on multiple assignments at once
- Must have experience in the trucking industry managing daily activity in scheduling, dispatching, and coordinating maintenance of fleets
- Must have a clear understanding of cost drivers and market trends in the trucking/logistics industry
- Detail oriented, data driven decision maker able to also understand soft cost
- Ability to drive projects through closure with follow up sustainment support (long term ownership)
- Able to lead a team through a process, gaining all team member involvement/participation
- Well-developed sense of judgment regarding quality, safety, delivery, and cost

EDUCATION AND TECHNOLOGY
- Bachelor’s Degree or related experience
- Minimum 15 years’ experience in senior leadership role in the trucking industry
- High level of DOT knowledge
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Strong working experience in ELD software systems (Samsara, Omnitracs, etc.)
- Strong understanding of telematics/tracking software (Fleet Locate, etc.)
- Experience with PC Miller or other mileage programs
- Contract development, negotiation, and implementation experience
