Summary:
Supports the Perioperative Team by managing material resources to include procurement, inventory management, and preference card maintenance.
Responsibilities
• Manages the supply and equipment resource systems for Perioperative areas.
o Responds to the material needs of the surgeons and operating room personnel.
o Ensures adequate supplies are readily available for perioperative areas.
o Collaborates with the perioperative services staff in achieving the most effective use of materials.
o Orders operational supplies on a daily/weekly basis to maintain the necessary inventory without interruption of services.
o Creates appropriate PAR levels for supplies.
o Assures mechanisms are in place to respond to supply and equipment needs and communicates responses to all parties.
o Responsible for the ordering of “special” order supplies as necessary and communicates to OR Charge Nurse.
o Places supplies in appropriate areas promptly.
• Helps coordinate, with the Materials Management Department, new product evaluations.
o Maintains current knowledge of product innovations.
o Coordinates new product evaluations.
o Involves physician and nursing staff with product evaluations.
o Establishes and maintains appropriate professional and ethical relationships with vendor representatives.
• Maintains a cost-effective materials management service.
o Works with Managers and Charge Nurses to control costs while maintaining quality.
o Works with all perioperative staff to capture supply charges.
o Develops and implements systems for managing operating room inventory in a cost effective manner, including the regular review of inventory for obsolete supplies and equipment.
o Collaborates with Materials Management Coordinator to integrate new products into charge system in a timely manner.
• Facilitates Perioperative staff knowledge of new equipment and supplies:
o Communicates effectively with other departments to coordinate procedural efforts, resolve operational problems and improve quality and efficiency.
o Identifies problems and issues and resolves them in a timely manner.
o Promotes team work by building a team environment and fostering cross-functional processes.
• Follows and enforces Infection Control policies and procedures.
• Demonstrates accountability for own self-improvement by:
o Communicating self-learning needs to manager;
o Demonstrating the ability to perform CPR; • Attending at least 75% monthly unit conferences annually.
• Demonstrates an open attitude and contributes as an active team member in the perioperative environment.
• Establishes goals/annually monitors achievements.
• If this position is held by a Certified Surgical Tech:
o Scrubs, assists, has all necessary supplies for cases as necessary according to case volume.
o Follows all job duties for CST job specifics.
o Attending fifteen (15) hours of mandatory continuing education programs annually to remain qualified for employment in South Carolina per January 1, 2008 South Carolina Amendment 44-7-380 (in addition to hospital mandatory programs).Attending at least 75% monthly unit conferences annually.
Qualifications:
HSD/GED required. Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred. Experience in supply management and two (2) years of Operating Room experience highly preferred. Must have or be able to acquire computer skills for ordering supplies and reporting.
