About This Position
Job Summary
Provides care and support to patients receiving clinical services and treatment of a Shannon physician or provider in various settings such as home care setting or workplace. Utilizing the established plan of care and treatment orders by a Shannon provider, medical assistant will provide high quality patient care and support.
Responsible for the delivery of patient care as directed, ordered, and documented by Shannon provider. The medical assistant works closely with leaders in the Home Care service line, other professional staff, clerical staff, ancillary department members, visitors, and families.

Physical Requirements

Performance: Position Specific Essential Functions
- Transports collected blood samples to appropriate laboratory for testing.
- Ensures the proper transfer of all specimens in accordance with laboratory and infection control procedures.
- Demonstrates accurate, knowledge and skill to carry out job duties. Follows departmental work policies and procedures. Speed and consistency of output, and time utilization of job duties.
- Maintains supplies in phlebotomy area and collection trays.
- Performs vein punctures, heel sticks, and fingerstick to collect proper specimens from patients.
- Demonstrates ability to consistently utilize electronic equipment and online computer programs to perform job duties, including electronic documentation, and order entry.
- Demonstrates the ability to trouble shoot electronic equipment, computers, IPads, etc.
- MA will be expected to help, support, and facilitate virtual visits for patients in patient home settings.
- Demonstrate clinical competencies necessary to provide care to patients in a home care setting.
- MA may be expected to collect payment at the time that services are rendered in the patient’s home.
- Consistently utilizes and maintains supplies and equipment to minimize lost charges and unnecessary equipment repair-replacement.
- Adheres to established policies on privacy and security requirements for compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), as applicable by Shannon Policy.
- Greets patients in a professional, service-oriented manner; weighs patients; takes patient vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure; documents height and weight of patients.
- Reviews medical charts; documents patient medical histories and symptoms in Shannon’s (EMR).
- Performs a variety of routine tasks while assisting physician with treatments or procedures.
- Confident and competent in clinical skills such as taking all necessary vital signs, height, weight, blood draws, and administration of oral and IM injections as needed.
- Advocates for and educates patients on the importance of preventative health care and screenings.
- Assists with patient education, providing written information and answering basic inquiries.
- Prepares excuses, complete forms, and maintain logs.
- Ability to make decisions and takes appropriate action based on the information they have. Recognizes own limitations and consults with the physician, supervisor, manager, or team member when appropriate.

Qualifications
Education
- Required
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
- Preferred
- RMA or CMA Program
Experience:
- Preferred
- Two or more years of Medical Assistant experience
- One or more years of Phlebotomy experience
Certification/Licensure:
- Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
- Must obtain within ninety (90) days of start date
- Valid Driver’s License
- Auto Liability Insurance
- Reliable Transportation
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
- Preferred
- Certified Phlebotomist Technician (CPT)
- Certified in Medical Assisting
