About the role

Zevra Therapeutics is seeking a Senior Medical Director to provide scientific and medical leadership in support of MIPLYFFA (Niemann-Pick disease type C) and the company's U.S. Medical Affairs activities. Reporting to the Vice President of Medical Affairs, this individual will be responsible for leading the development and execution of U.S. Medical Affairs strategy, advancing scientific engagement and evidence generation initiatives, and serving as a key medical expert across internal and external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will bring deep scientific and clinical expertise in rare diseases, significant experience leading U.S. Medical Affairs strategy, and a demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific information into meaningful medical strategies and initiatives. This individual will play a critical role in supporting MIPLYFFA, partnering cross-functionally with Commercial, Market Access, Patient Advocacy, and other teams to address unmet medical needs and improve patient outcomes.

In addition to providing medical and scientific leadership, the Senior Medical Director will oversee the U.S. field-based Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team, ensuring alignment with Medical Affairs objectives and supporting the team's continued development and effectiveness.

The successful candidate will be a collaborative, scientifically driven, hands-on Medical Affairs leader who thrives in a growing biotechnology environment and is comfortable balancing strategic responsibilities with tactical execution.

This position is based out our Boston, MA headquarters and follows Zevra's 4 day/week (Monday - Thursday) on-site schedule.

What you'll do
  • Develop, lead, and execute the U.S. Medical Affairs strategy for MIPLYFFA, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, evolving scientific evidence, and the needs of patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Serve as a senior medical and scientific expert in Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC), maintaining a deep understanding of the disease landscape, clinical data, treatment considerations, and emerging scientific developments.
  • Provide medical leadership and scientific guidance across U.S. Medical Affairs initiatives, including medical education, scientific communications, evidence generation, and external engagement.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), healthcare professionals, investigators, and other external scientific stakeholders to facilitate meaningful scientific exchange and identify unmet medical needs.
  • Lead and support evidence generation initiatives, including Phase IV studies, registries, investigator-initiated studies, real-world evidence initiatives, and expanded access programs, as appropriate.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Commercial, Market Access, Patient Advocacy, and other internal stakeholders to provide medical expertise and support compliant, scientifically sound business initiatives.
  • Serve as a medical reviewer for scientific publications, abstracts, presentations, medical education materials, promotional and non-promotional content, reimbursement dossiers, and payer-related materials.
  • Support the development and execution of medical communications and educational initiatives to advance understanding of NPC, MIPLYFFA, and the broader rare disease landscape.
  • Provide medical and scientific input into payer engagement activities, including the communication of clinical evidence and the development of scientifically accurate resources supporting patient access.
  • Translate scientific developments, external stakeholder insights, and emerging clinical evidence into actionable recommendations that inform U.S. Medical Affairs priorities.
  • Provide leadership and oversight to the U.S. field-based MSL team, including coaching, mentoring, performance management, and professional development.
  • Ensure field medical activities and scientific engagement strategies are aligned with U.S. Medical Affairs objectives and executed with scientific rigor and compliance.
  • Partner with Medical Excellence to establish and evaluate appropriate metrics, field medical insights, and performance indicators to support continuous improvement.
  • Provide medical expertise and scientific training to internal teams, including field medical and cross-functional stakeholders, as appropriate.
  • Maintain the highest standards of scientific integrity, ethical conduct, and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, industry standards, and company policies.
Qualifications
  • Advanced clinical or scientific degree (MD, DO, PharmD, or PhD) required; MD or DO preferred.
  • 7+ years of relevant Medical Affairs experience within the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry, with progressive responsibility and demonstrated medical leadership.
  • Deep scientific and medical expertise in rare diseases, with a strong understanding of rare disease treatment landscapes, clinical development, and unmet medical needs.
  • Significant experience leading the development and execution of U.S. Medical Affairs strategy, preferably for commercial-stage products, with demonstrated ownership of medical plans and initiatives.
  • Strong experience in scientific exchange, KOL engagement, medical communications, and evidence generation.
  • Ability to critically evaluate and interpret complex clinical data and translate scientific insights into actionable medical strategies.
  • Experience collaborating cross-functionally with Commercial, Market Access, Patient Advocacy, and other internal stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and an interest in managing and developing a field-based MSL team alongside broader corporate Medical Affairs responsibilities; prior people management experience preferred.
