Class A CDL Route Driver

Location: Flint, MI
Position Type: Full-Time | Hourly

Start times: 6am

Position Summary

The Class A CDL Route Driver plays a critical role in safely and efficiently collecting and transporting food waste along assigned intrastate and interstate routes. This position operates commercial vehicles while completing approximately 15–25 customer stops per day.

The driver is responsible for protecting cargo, following assigned schedules, maintaining accurate documentation, keeping equipment clean, and delivering outstanding customer service at each location. Success in this role requires professionalism, reliability, attention to detail, and an unwavering commitment to safety.

This is a safety-sensitive position that requires alertness, sound judgment, and diligence. Each employee is responsible for their own safety and the safety of coworkers, customers, vendors, and the public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Load, haul, collect, and deliver food-waste materials along company-assigned intrastate and interstate routes.
  • Complete approximately 15–25 customer stops per day based on routes established by the company.
  • Safely operate manual- and automatic-transmission commercial vehicles in compliance with DOT requirements and all applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Operate manual and electric pallet jacks as required.
  • Use a pressure washer to rinse bins and containers and ensure customer locations are left clean and free of debris.
  • Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Use basic hand tools to complete minor repairs to company bins and equipment.
  • Maintain basic truck equipment and ensure the vehicle and assigned equipment remain clean and in good operating condition.
  • Use the company’s electronic logging system to maintain accurate DOT driver logs and other required records.
  • Complete and submit contamination reports, service tickets, vehicle-maintenance records, and other required documentation.
  • Communicate professionally with customers and vendors to support safe and seamless operations.
  • Communicate regularly with the corporate office and operations team regarding service, equipment, routing, and customer-service concerns.
  • Immediately report all accidents, injuries, safety incidents, and equipment damage to the appropriate manager.
  • Attend and actively participate in weekly safety calls, training sessions, and operational briefings.
  • Use a computer and mobile phone for training, communication, electronic documentation, and expense management.
  • Maintain flexibility to work different assignments or routes based on operational needs.
  • Operate in interstate commerce when assigned, regardless of the driver’s regularly scheduled service route.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Schedule and Route Expectations

  • Ability to work flexible hours based on route demands and seasonal business needs.
  • Ability to work up to 60 hours during a seven-day period or 70 hours during an eight-day period, in accordance with DOT hours-of-service regulations.
  • Drivers may be assigned to routes other than their regular service routes at any time.
  • All drivers should expect to operate in interstate commerce when needed.
  • Start times, end times, workdays, and route assignments may vary based on operational requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
  • CDL must be self-certified with the issuing state as Non-Excepted Interstate.
  • Clean Motor Vehicle Record and Pre-Employment Screening Program record.
  • Must meet one of the following experience requirements:
    • At least 23 years old with a minimum of two years of full-time, verifiable tractor-trailer driving experience; or
    • At least 21 years old with one year of verifiable tractor-trailer driving experience and graduation from an accredited truck-driving school; or
    • At least 21 years old with one year of qualifying military driving experience.
  • Stable and verifiable employment history.
  • Ability to meet all company, DOT, and insurance eligibility requirements.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Ability to operate both manual- and automatic-transmission commercial vehicles.
  • Basic computer and mobile-phone proficiency.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Strong communication, customer-service, and time-management skills.
  • Commitment to safe driving and regulatory compliance.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly lift, pull, push, or carry up to 70 pounds.
  • Regularly bend, stoop, twist, shovel, climb, and reach overhead.
  • Pull or roll totes weighing up to 300 pounds.
  • Safely operate manual and electric pallet jacks.
  • Enter and exit commercial vehicles repeatedly throughout the workday.
  • Perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
  • Work around food waste, farms, and potentially unpleasant odors.
  • Work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, snow, and other changing weather conditions.
  • Complete all essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
