Job Description
Sterile Proc Tech-Surg ALG
Responsible for assuring quality sterilization for in-hospital sterilized items. Maintenance and distribution of patient bedside equipment.

Responsibilities:
- Participate in teaching other health care providers the proper care & handling of instruments & equipment (contaminated & sterile).
- Practice safe handling of supplies and equipment for protection of employees and patients.
- Follow Universal Precautions at all times.
- Clean and disinfect patient equipment between uses.
- Check function of patient equipment.
- Assure notification of electrical preventative maintenance needs on all patient equipment.
- Safe use of heat sealer.
- Safe handling of chemicals/disinfectants.
- Know and understand the principles of asepsis.
- Maintain a clean environment in the Sterile Processing Department.
- Assist and oversee Sterile Processing cleaning tasks.
- Limit/monitor traffic flow in department.
- Sterilization process specific requirements:.
- Safely & correctly wash (manually and/or mechanically), inspect, sort, and reassemble trays for re-sterilization.
- Use the ultrasonic cleaner.
- Assure item is disassembled correctly for sterilization.
- Correctly wrap/pouch items for sterilization.
- Correctly label items for use.
- Position item correctly for sterilization.
- Monitor sterilization.
- Bowie Dick testing.
- Biological testing.
- Chemical monitoring.
- Gauge/print out interpretations.
- Cool item correctly for storage.
- Store/distribute items correctly.
- Recognize a compromised sterile package.
- Fold and store linen.
- Order storeroom supplies as needed.
- Monitor Sterile Processing Department temperature and humidity, reporting any abnormality.
- Clean sterilizers and sterilizer carts as scheduled.
- Carry out recall of supplies in event of positive biological test.
- Clean and/or terminally sterilize flexible endoscopes.
- Contribute to the improvement/updating of Sterile Processing policies and procedures.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:
- Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
- Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
- Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
- Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Complies with established organization and department policies.
- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.
Licensure / Certification / Registration:
- Preferred Credential(s):
- Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) strongly encouraged and certification maintained or willingness to become certified.
- Central Service Tech specializing in Sterile Processing credentialed from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association.
- Central Service Tech specializing in Sterile Processing credentialed from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).
Education:
- High School diploma equivalency OR 1 year of applicable cumulative job specific experience required. *Note: Required professional licensure/certification can be used in lieu of education or experience, if applicable.
