This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director of AML & Virtual Asset Compliance based in the United States.
This is a senior compliance leadership opportunity at the intersection of financial crime prevention, blockchain technology, and digital assets.
You’ll help shape and strengthen AML and virtual asset compliance capabilities while supporting responsible growth in a rapidly evolving regulatory environment.
The role combines strategic leadership with hands-on expertise across AML frameworks, sanctions, transaction monitoring, investigations, and blockchain risk.
You’ll advise financial institutions and virtual asset service providers on regulatory expectations and emerging financial crime risks.
The position offers significant exposure to senior stakeholders, regulators, law enforcement, clients, and industry partners.
You’ll work cross-functionally with product, engineering, and business development teams to translate regulatory requirements into practical solutions.
Success will require strong judgment, commercial awareness, technical knowledge, and the ability to navigate both traditional finance and the virtual asset ecosystem.
- Build, enhance, and maintain AML and virtual asset compliance frameworks aligned with applicable regulatory requirements and industry standards.
- Develop compliance strategies covering sanctions, risk assessments, transaction monitoring, investigations, suspicious activity reviews, and regulatory reporting.
- Advise financial institutions and virtual asset service providers on virtual asset compliance obligations, regulatory expectations, and blockchain-related financial crime risks.
- Monitor regulatory and legislative developments and translate emerging requirements into practical compliance guidance, risk controls, and product requirements.
- Where applicable, serve as Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) or support the designated MLRO with suspicious activity reviews, investigations, and regulatory reporting.
- Apply blockchain analytics and on-chain intelligence to assess financial crime risks, identify suspicious activity, and strengthen compliance controls.
- Partner with Product, Engineering, Business Development, and other internal teams to embed compliance considerations into products, services, and commercial initiatives.
- Build credible relationships with regulators, law enforcement agencies, financial institutions, exchanges, VASPs, and other industry stakeholders.
- Serve as a senior subject matter expert on AML, financial crime, virtual assets, blockchain risk, and regulatory compliance.
- Support clients and internal stakeholders in understanding complex blockchain-related risks and translating them into practical risk-management approaches.
- Balance regulatory requirements and risk controls with commercial objectives, helping develop compliance solutions that enable responsible business growth.
- Proven experience in a senior AML or financial crime leadership position, such as MLRO, Chief Compliance Officer, Head of Financial Crime, or a comparable role.
- Demonstrated experience working across both traditional financial institutions and the virtual asset industry.
- Strong knowledge of AML, financial crime prevention, sanctions, transaction monitoring, investigations, regulatory compliance, and regulatory reporting.
- Deep understanding of financial crime risks associated with virtual assets, blockchain-based transactions, wallets, and decentralized financial activity.
- Hands-on experience with blockchain analytics, Know Your Transaction (KYT), wallet screening, or comparable on-chain compliance tools and processes.
- Ability to design, implement, and improve AML programs and compliance frameworks in complex or rapidly evolving environments.
- Strong understanding of regulatory expectations affecting financial institutions and virtual asset service providers.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to explain complex compliance and blockchain concepts to executives, regulators, financial institutions, and technical teams.
- Strong commercial judgment and a practical, solutions-oriented approach to compliance.
- CAMS certification or an equivalent AML/financial crime qualification.
- Experience owning an AML program for a regulated entity, supporting VASP licensing, managing regulatory examinations, or leading remediation initiatives is highly desirable.
- Established professional relationships with regulators, law enforcement agencies, banks, exchanges, or other virtual asset industry participants are a strong advantage.

- Competitive annual base salary range of $150,000–$220,000 USD for U.S.-based candidates.
