Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Developer, Book of Record (Core Balances) based in Canada.
As a Senior Software Developer, you will own critical backend services responsible for tracking client balances, financial activity, and reserved assets in real time.
You’ll join a small, high-trust engineering team where senior developers have meaningful ownership and autonomy from day one.
Your work will sit on the critical path for financial products used by millions of clients, making correctness, reliability, and performance essential.
You’ll tackle challenging distributed-systems problems involving high availability, low latency, event processing, database performance, and financial accuracy.
You’ll also help modernize mature systems, improving architecture without compromising live production workloads or client trust.
Working closely with Product and neighbouring engineering teams, you’ll turn complex financial requirements into dependable services and simple client experiences.
The environment values pragmatic engineering, continuous learning, mentorship, operational excellence, and thoughtful use of AI-assisted development.
- Design, build, deploy, and operate backend services supporting real-time balances, asset reservations, and financial activity.
- Own meaningful technical scope end-to-end, from architecture and technical design through implementation, production deployment, monitoring, and ongoing improvement.
- Solve complex engineering challenges involving real-time correctness, low latency, high availability, database contention, event processing, and peak-volume reliability.
- Modernize and evolve mature financial systems by consolidating overlapping services and data models, establishing reliable entry points for financial activity, isolating failure domains, and improving recovery and backfill capabilities.
- Execute architectural changes and migrations safely on live, high-traffic systems while maintaining availability and ensuring clients are never presented with incorrect financial information.
- Raise engineering standards through thoughtful system design, rigorous code reviews, testing, observability, and strong production ownership.
- Mentor other engineers through pairing, reviews, technical guidance, and continuous feedback while contributing to a collaborative learning environment.
- Work closely with Product and adjacent engineering teams to translate complex financial logic and requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Apply AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully to improve engineering speed, quality, and safety while helping shape effective AI-enabled development practices.
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a track record of building and operating critical production systems.
- Strong backend engineering capabilities, including sound judgment around system architecture, reliability, scalability, and technical trade-offs.
- Proven experience developing highly available and low-latency services and operating them reliably under significant production load.
- Strong experience with JVM-based technologies; Kotlin is the primary language, while deep Java experience or comparable backend expertise is highly transferable.
- Familiarity with technologies such as Kafka, GraphQL, and modern distributed systems is valuable.
- Strong production ownership mindset, with the ability to remain calm, analytical, and methodical when incidents or unexpected failures occur.
- Comfort working within mature codebases and improving existing systems incrementally rather than relying on greenfield development.
- Strong software quality practices, including automated testing, maintainable code, observability, and constructive code review.
- Clear and proactive communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across Product and Engineering and surface questions or concerns early.
- Genuine curiosity about the business and financial context behind technical systems, including the real-world impact on clients.
- Enthusiasm for AI-assisted development and an interest in establishing rigorous, effective approaches to incorporating AI into engineering workflows.
- Experience in fintech, banking, trading, or another regulated or high-stakes environment is an advantage.
- Familiarity with ledgers, reconciliation, financial correctness, event-driven architecture, stream processing, or transactional consistency patterns is preferred.
- Additional experience with Kafka or Flink, GraphQL/Apollo Federation, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL performance at scale, or large-scale live-system migrations is a plus.
- Comprehensive health and life insurance benefits.
- Long-term group savings program with employer matching.
- 20 vacation days plus 4 wellness days annually.
- Unlimited sick and mental health days.
- 90 Days Away program allowing employees to work outside Canada for up to 90 days per year.
- A hybrid working environment with a distributed team across North America.
- Access to employee resource groups supporting inclusion and community, including groups focused on 2SLGBTQ+ employees, women, and Black employees.
- Opportunity to work alongside highly talented, curious, and collaborative engineering professionals.
- A culture that encourages continuous learning, experimentation, thoughtful use of AI, and evolving engineering practices.
- Meaningful ownership over systems that underpin critical financial experiences used by millions of clients.
- Accessibility accommodations are available throughout the hiring process.
