Dermatology Medical Assistant / Mohs Technician in Visalia, California at Peak Dermatology

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and dependable Dermatology Medical Assistant / Mohs Technician to join our dermatology practice. The ideal candidate will have prior dermatology experience with hands-on knowledge of Mohs micrographic surgery and Mohs laboratory procedures.

This position will work closely with our dermatologist and clinical team to provide exceptional patient care while supporting both general dermatology and Mohs surgery. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, comfortable in a fast-paced surgical environment, and committed to maintaining high standards of patient care and laboratory quality.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Escort patients to and from exam and procedure rooms and prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
• Obtain and document complete medical histories, medications, allergies, and other relevant patient information.
• Assist the physician/provider during patient visits and accurately document encounters in the electronic medical record.
• Assist with Mohs micrographic surgery, including room setup, patient preparation, surgical assistance, wound care, bandaging, and post-procedure instructions.
• Prepare the Mohs laboratory and required supplies for daily surgical cases.
• Perform Mohs laboratory duties, including tissue processing, embedding, cryostat sectioning, slide preparation, staining, and coverslipping.
• Produce high-quality frozen tissue sections for physician interpretation.
• Properly label and track Mohs specimens and slides throughout the procedure.
• Maintain Mohs laboratory equipment, including cleaning and routine maintenance of the cryostat and related equipment.
• Follow appropriate laboratory safety, infection-control, and specimen-handling protocols.
• Assist with biopsies, excisions, suture removals, and other dermatologic surgical procedures.
• Assist with cosmetic and dermatologic procedures as needed.
• Prepare and collect pathology and laboratory specimens.
• Notify patients of results as directed by the provider and coordinate follow-up appointments.
• Provide wound-care instructions and assist with dressing changes and suture removals.
• Clean, disinfect, organize, and stock exam and procedure rooms.
• Clean, sterilize, and autoclave surgical instruments.
• Maintain appropriate inventory of surgical, laboratory, and clinical supplies.
• Maintain accurate documentation and protect patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
• Support the clinical team and perform other back-office duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Previous Mohs technician experience required.
• Prior experience preparing frozen sections using a cryostat required.
• Experience with tissue embedding, sectioning, staining, and slide preparation.
• Dermatology and dermatologic surgery experience strongly preferred.
• Medical Assistant experience preferred.
• Knowledge of sterile technique, infection control, and surgical procedures.
• Experience working with electronic medical records; dermatology EMR experience preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent attention to detail.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Ability to prioritize responsibilities and work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical and surgical environment.
• Ability to understand and follow physician instructions and recognize when additional guidance is needed.
