Reports To - Zilkha Hall Production Manager

Direct Reports - N/A

Status - Regular Full-Time Non-Exempt

Location - On site at the Hobby Center campus in Downtown Houston, TX

Schedule As needed, based on Zilkha Hall event and show calls and general maintenance of equipment.

OVERVIEW

The Hobby Center’s Zilkha Hall House Carpenter is an integral member of the house crew that provides technical support for all productions and events occurring in Zilkha Hall at The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. This dynamic individual is responsible for planning, maintaining, implementing, repairing, and coordinating carpentry and rigging elements. Working directly with clients, they are a hands-on individual that is critical to the success of the diverse range of programming presented in the venue. They are familiar with all types of events ranging from musical theatre, dance, concerts, symphony, comedy, corporate presentations, and special events.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain and oversee operation of the counterweight rigging system equipment to ensure safe and efficient movement of stage drops and scenery.
  • Maintain and operate motorized facility rigging, safety, and door equipment.
  • Oversee appropriate use of facility theatrical drops/curtains (soft goods).
  • Maintain Serapid-Linklift brand orchestra pit lift.
  • Maintain an inventory of stage supplies, hardware, and tools including hand and power tools, measuring devices, nuts, bolts, screws and various fasteners, aircraft cable and rigging hardware, paint, steel, and lumber.
  • Assist and collaborate with others regarding carpentry and rigging needs in other spaces at the HCPA.
  • Identify potential problems and maintenance needs. Recommend a course of action to maintain, upgrade, and prevent damage to stage equipment.
  • Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of stage equipment to ensure it is available for event use.
  • Plan for and recommend the purchase of new equipment and systems when existing equipment reaches the end of its life expectancy.
  • Ensure client compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Supervise over hire carpenters and rigging crew in facilitating the above duties.

Skills and Qualifications

Team members at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts must thrive on challenge and be comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Working with a nimble and efficient team requires that members bring an entrepreneurial spirit to their work, providing leadership across a broad scope of work.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a theatrical carpenter/rigger. Specific experience working within a performing arts center is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency with single purchase counterweight rigging system operation and maintenance.
  • Experience with lighting, audio, and projection helpful.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, and to climb and work at various heights as needed.

COMPENSATION

The Hobby Center offers a competitive compensation and benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life, disability, a 403b savings plan with matching employer contributions, mobile phone stipend, parking, and paid time off. The anticipated hiring hourly rate for this position is $41.12.
