Job Description

Salem University’s School of Nursing is seeking qualified, student-centered nursing professionals to serve as Adjunct Nursing Faculty within the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program.

Adjunct Nursing Faculty may be assigned to clinical, didactic, laboratory, and/or simulation instruction based on program needs, faculty qualifications, clinical expertise, and availability. Faculty provide high-quality, evidence-based nursing education designed to develop students’ clinical judgment, nursing knowledge, technical competencies, professional practice, and readiness for safe entry-level nursing practice and NCLEX success.

Adjunct Nursing Faculty collaborate with course coordinators, nursing faculty, the Program Director, and the Dean of Nursing to ensure instruction and student evaluation align with approved curriculum, course and program learning outcomes, academic standards, and applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Teaching assignments are made on an as-needed basis and are not guaranteed from term to term.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below are representative of the responsibilities of this position. Specific responsibilities will vary based on clinical, didactic, laboratory, and/or simulation assignment. Additional duties may be assigned based on program or institutional needs.

Clinical Instruction & Supervision

  • Provide direct supervision and instruction to ASN students in assigned clinical environments, which may include acute care, long-term care, outpatient, community, and specialty settings.
  • Facilitate student application of nursing theory, clinical judgment, technical skills, and evidence-based practice in the clinical environment.
  • Promote safe, appropriate, and professional patient care in accordance with established standards and clinical-site requirements.
  • Observe and evaluate student clinical performance and progression toward established course and program outcomes.
  • Facilitate pre-conference and post-conference activities that promote reflection, clinical reasoning, prioritization, and application of nursing knowledge.
  • Provide timely coaching and feedback regarding student clinical performance.
  • Intervene appropriately when student performance or patient-safety concerns are identified.
  • Communicate significant student performance, safety, or progression concerns to the appropriate course coordinator and nursing leadership.
  • Maintain required clinical documentation and student evaluation records.

Didactic Instruction

  • Provide classroom instruction for assigned nursing courses in accordance with approved curriculum, course objectives, and learning outcomes.
  • Utilize evidence-based and student-centered teaching strategies to promote student learning and engagement.
  • Connect nursing theory with clinical practice and real-world patient-care situations.
  • Reinforce development of clinical judgment, prioritization, decision-making, and safe nursing practice.
  • Incorporate appropriate NCLEX preparation and clinical-judgment concepts into instruction.
  • Utilize the University's Learning Management System and required instructional technologies.
  • Maintain assigned course content, announcements, grades, and instructional materials as required.
  • Provide timely and appropriate responses to student questions and academic needs.

Laboratory & Simulation Instruction

  • Provide instruction and supervision within nursing skills laboratories and simulation environments as assigned.
  • Demonstrate nursing procedures and technical skills using evidence-based practices and established program standards.
  • Facilitate skills practice, return demonstrations, competency validation, and remediation as appropriate.
  • Develop or facilitate simulation experiences that reinforce clinical judgment, patient safety, communication, teamwork, and application of nursing knowledge.
  • Facilitate simulation pre-briefing and debriefing activities consistent with established program practices.
  • Evaluate student performance during laboratory and simulation activities.
  • Maintain a safe and effective learning environment during laboratory and simulation instruction.

Student Assessment & Academic Support

  • Evaluate student achievement through direct observation, clinical evaluation, assignments, examinations, skills assessments, simulation activities, and other approved methods.
  • Apply established grading criteria, rubrics, and evaluation standards consistently.
  • Provide timely, specific, and constructive feedback regarding student performance.
  • Maintain accurate and timely grades, attendance records, evaluations, and other required academic documentation.
  • Identify students experiencing academic, clinical, or skills-related difficulty.
  • Communicate concerns regarding student performance or progression through appropriate academic channels.
  • Provide appropriate instructional support and refer students to additional University resources when needed.
  • Support student accountability, professional development, persistence, and academic success.

Curriculum & Program Collaboration

  • Collaborate with course coordinators and other nursing faculty to ensure consistency in instruction, student expectations, assessment, and evaluation.
  • Deliver instruction in accordance with approved curriculum and established course requirements.
  • Participate in course review, assessment, and continuous-improvement activities as assigned.
  • Provide feedback regarding course content, student performance, instructional resources, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Support implementation of approved curriculum and instructional changes.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, orientations, training, and program activities as required.

Compliance & Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain professional practice and instruction consistent with applicable nursing licensure requirements and scope of practice.
  • Adhere to School of Nursing, University, clinical-partner, regulatory, and accreditation requirements applicable to assigned responsibilities.
  • Maintain accurate and complete documentation of student attendance, performance, competency, and evaluation.
  • Protect confidential student, patient, and clinical information.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students and patients.
  • Serve as a professional role model demonstrating ethical nursing practice, accountability, professionalism, communication, and respect.
  • Maintain required professional credentials, clinical requirements, and continuing education.
  • Immediately communicate patient-safety, student-safety, or significant compliance concerns through appropriate channels.
  • Perform other faculty responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse license in West Virginia or a multistate license permitting nursing practice in West Virginia.
  • Minimum of two years of recent direct patient-care nursing experience.
  • Previous experience in nursing education, clinical instruction, precepting, staff education, or comparable teaching/mentoring responsibilities.
  • Current clinical knowledge and demonstrated professional nursing competency appropriate to assigned teaching responsibilities.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification appropriate to the assigned clinical environment.
  • Strong written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively evaluate and provide feedback regarding student performance.
  • Ability to use or learn the University's Learning Management System and required instructional technologies.
  • Ability to satisfy applicable University and clinical-partner health, credentialing, onboarding, and compliance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or other applicable graduate nursing degree.
  • Previous teaching experience in a prelicensure nursing program.
  • Experience teaching didactic nursing courses.
  • Experience supervising nursing students in clinical environments.
  • Experience with nursing skills laboratory instruction and competency validation.
  • Experience developing or facilitating nursing simulation.
  • Experience incorporating NCLEX preparation and clinical-judgment strategies into nursing education.
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems and instructional technology.
  • Familiarity with nursing education accreditation and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience teaching within an Associate Degree in Nursing or ASN program.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during clinical, laboratory, simulation, and classroom instruction.
  • Ability to bend, reach, stoop, kneel, and perform movements necessary to demonstrate and supervise nursing skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate and assist students with patient positioning, mobility, transfers, and other nursing-care activities as appropriate.
  • Ability to operate and demonstrate nursing and simulation equipment.
  • Ability to respond promptly to student or patient-safety concerns within clinical and laboratory environments.
  • Frequent use of computers, Learning Management Systems, and instructional technology.
  • Ability to travel to assigned clinical sites as required.

Work Environment

This position may provide instruction at Salem University's campus in Salem, West Virginia, and at assigned clinical affiliate locations.

Teaching environments may include classrooms, nursing laboratories, simulation environments, hospitals, long-term-care facilities, outpatient settings, community healthcare environments, and other approved clinical locations.

Teaching schedules may include daytime, evening, and/or weekend assignments depending on course schedules, clinical-site availability, and program needs.

Adjunct teaching assignments are based on enrollment, scheduling, program needs, clinical-site availability, faculty qualifications, and instructor availability. Appointment as adjunct faculty does not guarantee a specific number of courses, clinical assignments, or continued teaching assignments from term to term.
