The Messaging Systems Engineer will be responsible for architecting, deploying, and maintaining enterprise-scale messaging platforms while ensuring reliability, security, and operational excellence. This role requires strong ownership of streaming infrastructure and close collaboration with application teams to enable efficient event-driven development.
- Design, deploy, configure, and operate large-scale Apache Kafka and Confluent Platform environments.
- Own Kafka platform lifecycle management, including cluster sizing, configuration, upgrades, security, automation, and performance optimization.
- Ensure platform reliability through high availability, disaster recovery strategies, monitoring, and operational best practices.
- Manage Kafka security configurations, including authentication, authorization, encryption, and access controls.
- Support application teams in building reliable event-driven architectures and integrating with messaging platforms.
- Implement and maintain Kafka ecosystem components, including Kafka Connect, Schema Registry, Kafka Streams, and ksqlDB.
- Develop automation solutions using scripting languages and infrastructure-as-code practices.
- Improve observability and troubleshooting capabilities through effective monitoring and logging solutions.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, product, and business teams to translate requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, design discussions, and technical mentorship activities.
- Create and maintain technical documentation and operational standards.
The ideal candidate is a highly experienced messaging infrastructure engineer with strong knowledge of Kafka ecosystems, DevOps practices, and production-scale distributed systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience operating Apache Kafka or Confluent Platform in production environments.
- Strong understanding of Kafka internals, including partitions, replication, ISRs, and consumer groups.
- Experience implementing Kafka security solutions using SASL, mTLS, ACLs, and RBAC.
- Hands-on experience with Kafka Connect, Schema Registry, and Kafka Streams or ksqlDB.
- Experience designing and implementing high availability and disaster recovery strategies for Kafka platforms.
- Strong scripting skills with Python, Bash, Go, or similar technologies.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or Ansible.
- Knowledge of Kafka observability and monitoring practices.
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, and documentation skills.
- Experience operating Kafka on Kubernetes platforms such as Strimzi or Confluent Operator is a plus.
- Familiarity with managed Kafka services, including AWS MSK or Azure Event Hubs Kafka API, is a plus.
- Exposure to stream processing technologies such as Flink or Spark Streaming is a plus.
- Experience with data governance and lineage for streaming data is a plus.
- Confluent Certified Administrator or Developer certification is a plus.
- Competitive annual salary range of $100,000–$150,000, based on experience and qualifications.
