Fellow – Rutgers Athletics | RWJBarnabas Health

This 11-month Sports Physical Therapy Fellowship offers a unique opportunity to combine advanced clinical practice with collegiate athletics. This fellowship provides hands-on experience delivering comprehensive physical therapy services to NCAA Division I student-athletes while working alongside an interdisciplinary sports health team dedicated to injury prevention, rehabilitation, performance, and return-to-play. As the Fellow, you will serve as a full-time physical therapist within Rutgers University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, supporting the health, safety, and performance of student-athletes through evidence-based care, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. This fellowship is ideal for a motivated clinician seeking to further develop expertise in sports physical therapy within a fast-paced, high-performance collegiate athletic environment.

A typical day for a Fellow may include:

  • Providing evidence-based physical therapy evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation services for Rutgers University student-athletes in accordance with the New Jersey Physical Therapy Practice Act
  • Assisting with the supervision and coordination of the University's comprehensive Sports Health Program, including injury prevention, evaluation, management, rehabilitation, and return-to-play planning
  • Performing pre-participation movement assessments and developing individualized corrective exercise and injury prevention programs
  • Collaborating with sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning professionals, and other members of the interdisciplinary sports health team to optimize athlete care
  • Educating student-athletes, coaches, and staff on injury prevention strategies, rehabilitation progress, and performance optimization
  • Developing individualized rehabilitation plans while actively involving student-athletes and coaching staff in the plan of care
  • Maintaining accurate, timely, and confidential patient documentation in accordance with Rutgers Sports Health policies, New Jersey Board of Consumer Affairs regulations, and Department of Health requirements
  • Communicating patient progress and clinical recommendations to physicians and other healthcare professionals through written documentation and ongoing interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of departmental policies, procedures, standards of care, and long-term program initiatives within the Sports Health Department
  • Supervising physical therapy students during clinical education experiences in partnership with accredited colleges and universities
  • Maintaining the Hale Center physical therapy facility, treatment equipment, and clinical supply inventory to ensure operational readiness
  • Supporting athletic events and departmental initiatives as needed while performing additional responsibilities that contribute to the success of Rutgers Athletics Sports Health Services

To be considered for this Fellow opportunity:

  • Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from a program accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association's Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE)
  • Graduate of an accredited Sports Residency program and/or current Sports Certified Specialist (SCS) credential through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS)
  • Current Physical Therapist license in the State of New Jersey
  • Current American Heart Association BLS/CPR/AED certification for the Professional Rescuer
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities while working effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary sports medicine teams, coaches, athletic administrators, and athlete support personnel
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and exercising sound professional judgment when managing protected health information
  • Ability to lift equipment and supplies up to 50 pounds and assist with the transport and ambulation of injured individuals
  • Previous experience working with highly motivated individuals in collegiate, professional, or elite athletic settings is preferred
  • Flexibility to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and occasional travel as required to support Rutgers Athletics
