The 4 West nursing unit is a team oriented, Medical-Surgical unit which cares for various medical conditions and specializes in the care of the renal patient. The unit consists of 35 beds including: 31 private rooms and a 4 bed semi-private secured area used to provide care to inmates. The nursing staff on the unit are trained on many therapeutic modalities including: IV therapy; intermittent cardiac monitoring; peritoneal dialysis; parenteral and enteral nutrition; wound and skin care; respiratory care; general post-op surgical care; & moderate sedation for procedures. Special training programs include: peritoneal dialysis, care of renal transplantation patients and chemotherapy administration for registered nurses. The nurse to patient ratio is 1:4-5. The unit utilizes self/flexible scheduling and has scored in the 99% for employee satisfaction. Orientation to the unit is 6-8 weeks which includes general hospital and nursing orientation, computer documentation training and clinical orientation.
