About This Position
The First Mate is the second-in-command on a vessel, assisting the Captain in all aspects of ship operations, navigation, and crew management. This role ensures the safety and efficiency of the vessel, oversees deck operations, and maintains compliance with maritime regulations. The First Mate also serves as the acting Captain in the Captain’s absence.
Key Responsibilities:-
Navigation & Operations: Assist in plotting courses, monitoring weather conditions, and ensuring safe vessel operation.

Safety & Compliance: Enforce safety protocols, conduct safety drills, and ensure compliance with maritime laws and company policies.

Crew Supervision: Manage deckhands and other crew members, assigning tasks and ensuring efficient workflow.

Maintenance Oversight: Inspect and maintain vessel equipment, including navigation tools, safety gear, and deck machinery.

Cargo & Logistics Management: Oversee loading, securing, and unloading of cargo or passenger accommodations, depending on the vessel type.

Emergency Response: Lead emergency drills and act as second-in-command during crisis situations such as man-overboard, fire, or mechanical failures.

Record-Keeping: Maintain ship logs, incident reports, and ensure proper documentation of daily operations.

Valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with appropriate endorsements

STCW certification (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping)

Experience in vessel navigation and deck operations

Strong leadership and communication skills

Knowledge of maritime regulations and emergency procedures

Ability to operate and maintain deck equipment

Physically fit and able to work in challenging conditions

Prior experience as a First Mate or Deck Officer

Familiarity with modern navigation systems and electronic charts

CPR and First Aid certification

Experience with specific vessel types (e.g., fishing, cargo, passenger, or private yachts)
