Job Description
Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Director of the Hyperbaric Medicine Department, the Hyperbaric Medical Nurse / Technician administers hyperbaric oxygen therapy to patient as prescribed by the Hyperbaric Physician. Operates and maintains the hyperbaric chamber(s) and associated systems and equipment. Assists in the delivery of patient care appropriate to the level of his/her medical training. In addition to the above duties nurses will be expected to, coordinate patient treatments into the total nursing care plan for patients, participates in patient and family teaching and provides leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary nursing and other patient team personnel in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice in the clinical setting. Safety Coordinator duties include maintaining safety standards for the facility, equipment, and staff education/training set forth by regulatory authorities and any subscribed accreditation agencies.
Performance: Position Specific Essential Functions
- Prepares and operates the hyperbaric chamber, equipment, medicine and materials as needed for patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Operates, maintains, and ensures the safety of the hyperbaric facility and all associated systems and equipment.
- Explains purpose and procedure of hyperbaric treatment to the patient.
- Carries out hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment protocols as prescribed by the Hyperbaric Physician.
- Observes the patients and the hyperbaric systems during the course of hyperbaric oxygen treatment. Reports unusual occurrences to hyperbaric physician and records patients' condition.
- Maintains operating, maintenance, safety logs, cleanliness and other required documentation. Signs all logs specified in departmental policy and procedure.
- Takes an active role in hyperbaric medicine education programs as well as in orienting hospital and other personnel to hyperbaric oxygen therapy and the Hyperbaric Medicine Department.
- Safety Coordinator duties include maintaining safety standards for the facility, equipment, and staff education/training set forth by regulatory authorities and any subscribed accreditation agencies.

Qualifications
Education
- Required
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
- Completion of an accredited Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program
- 40 credit hour UHMS approved Hyperbaric Medicine Introductory Course
- UHMS or NBDHMT approved Hyperbaric Safety Director Training Course, required within 1 year
Experience:
- Preferred
- Healthcare/Medical – Clinical Hyperbaric; 1 year
Certification/Licensure:
- Required
- Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), with Authorization to Practice in the State of Texas
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
- Must obtain within ninety (90) days of start date
- Certification in Hyperbaric from organization recognized by the Undersea Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS)
- Preferred
- Certification in a Nursing Specialty Area, by an organization recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing
