Job Description

Job Title: IEP Specialist

Reports To: Director of Special Education

Location: District Office

Employment Type: Full-Time, 12-Month Position

Position Summary

The IEP Specialist plays a critical role in supporting the Special Education Department across the entire K–12 charter school district. This position is responsible for ensuring high-quality, compliant, and student-centered Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The IEP Specialist provides direct support to special education teachers, collaborates with school teams and families, and ensures fidelity to all federal and state special education requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

IEP Development & Compliance

  • Write and/or support the development of IEPs in compliance with IDEA, state, and district regulations
  • Review existing IEPs for compliance, clarity, and instructional alignment
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation for all IEP-related activities

Support & Collaboration

  • Serve as a resource and mentor to special education teachers regarding best practices for IEP development, progress monitoring, and documentation
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, administrators, and related service providers to ensure effective IEP implementation
  • Provide professional development and training to school teams on IEP procedures and legal updates

Meeting Participation

  • Attend and facilitate IEP meetings as the LEA representative or IEP writer as needed
  • Communicate effectively with families, ensuring they are informed and involved in the IEP process
  • Ensure meetings are scheduled, documented, and conducted within required timelines

Case Management Support

  • Support case managers in maintaining compliance with timelines and data collection
  • Assist in developing appropriate goals and accommodations/modifications based on data and student needs
  • Participate in audits and assist in preparing for state or district reviews

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field (Master’s preferred)
  • Valid Special Education teaching credential or related certification
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in special education, with extensive knowledge of the IEP process
  • Strong understanding of IDEA, ADA, and relevant state special education laws and regulations
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skill
  • Proficiency with special education data systems

Preferred Skills & Attributes

  • Experience supporting special education in a charter school or multi-site environment
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities across schools and grade levels (K–12)
  • Collaborative team player who models professionalism, integrity, and empath
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are a plus

Work Environment & Travel

  • This role will serve multiple school sites and campuses across the district (Tucson and Phoenix)
  • Occasional evening meetings or events may be required.
