About This Position
Semi-skilled maintenance and manual work in various activities involving construction, maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, storm drains and traffic signage. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Works Supervisor. Must have completed, at a minimum, one (1) year employment as Maintenance I, unless otherwise approved by the City Manager. During occasions of local emergencies, this position shall be required to perform emergency tasks which may result in extended work hours as well as extended periods of time away from family members.
• Performs construction and maintenance work including streets, sidewalks, stormwater and drainage systems, and traffic signage.
• Performs heavy manual labor such as digging, lifting, cleaning and repairing storm drains, repairing and replacing sidewalks, filling potholes and crack sealing streets.
• Performs storm drain maintenance, removes and replaces drains; repairs catch basins, cleans and removes debris from storm drains.
• Installs and downloads data from radar recorder.
• Operates various types and sizes of trucks and motorized equipment.
• Serves as a lead worker over Maintenance I employee when assigned to do so.
• Loads and unloads heavy materials from trucks and moves or assists in moving heavy equipment.
• Demonstrates thorough knowledge of all departmental/divisional policies and procedures and the City's Personnel Policies and Procedures.
• Strives to maximize effective communications between assigned personnel, other employees throughout the City, and the general public.
• Performs other job related duties that are consistent with assigned Department responsibilities.
• Must have working knowledge of Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) procedures.
• Must have working knowledge of Best Management Practices (BMP) procedures.
• Must have working knowledge of Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector procedures.
• Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or needed repairs to Supervisor. Cleans and checks tools and equipment after use.
• Responds to emergency situations and assists with solving problems as they arise.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• May work from a bucket truck to trim and remove tree branches or palm fronds obstructing pedestrian or vehicular traffic or traffic signs; removes dead, unsafe, or condemned trees from right-of-way areas or on City-owned property.
• May assist Parks and Grounds Department with grounds maintenance including mowing, edging, line trimming and other related tasks.
• May assist Facilities Department with interior and exterior building repairs.
• Sets up Recreation Center, Council Chambers, Community Building Parkview Room, and other City facilities to accommodate special meetings and seating requirements.
• Assists with City special events and seasonal activities such as setting up and working during City events and installing and removing Christmas decorations throughout the City.
• Attends workshops and training courses.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required. Maintenance I position requires 1- 3 years of in the trades specified or other specific vocational preparation. The Maintenance II position requires a minimum five (5) years experience in the trades specified or other specific vocational preparation.
Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and activities of the various trade areas specified for this position. Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations which may occur. Ability to read blueprints related to the tasks being performed. Ability to estimate time, materials, and supplies required to complete various repair and/or maintenance activities. Ability to perform mathematical calculations that may be required to complete repair or maintenance projects. Ability to complete all work assignments in an efficient and timely manner. Ability to perform the required duties and responsibilities in extreme weather conditions. Ability to work alone. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and management as necessitated by the work. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS
Possession of a valid Florida Class B, CDL Driver's License with tanker endorsement, Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification, Best Management Practices (BMP) certification, and Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector certification, or the ability to obtain within one year of employment.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS
Heavy (fifty (50) pounds or over) lifting and carrying required. Performs physical tasks while walking, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, lifting, and reaching. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks for extended periods of time in varying inclement weather conditions. Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Works inside and outside in varying and inclement weather conditions for extended periods of time with noise, dust, fumes, grease, oil, electrical energy, heat, and cold conditions. Ability to work in confined spaces. Works on slippery and uneven surfaces. Works in transportation right-of-way areas with moving objects or vehicles. Works at heights of up to thirty (30) to forty (40) feet. Performs physical tasks while walking, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, lifting, reaching, etc.
