About This Position

Performs a variety of skilled inspections, diagnosis, maintenance, servicing, and repair work on City automobiles and light trucks.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or GED, and one years of responsible work experience in performing skilled maintenance and repair on automotive, heavy construction equipment, transit buses; or any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
LICENSING & TRAINING:

  • Valid State Driver's License
  • National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) training based on assignment.
*Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair various air conditioning and/or heating systems.
  • Maintain a clean work environment, including emptying trash and floor clean-up when necessary.
  • Services all vehicles on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Performs minor repairs on all vehicles and equipment to ensure performance under all conditions.
  • Makes modifications to new or existing City vehicles in accordance with departmental needs and specifications.
  • Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
  • Repairs brake, engine electrical, fuel, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust and related systems.
  • Replaces and repairs faulty parts, including wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and other components.
  • Works on relays, lights, and switches; changes and installs belts and hoses.
  • Changes and repairs tires and tubes.
  • Maintains complete and accurate maintenance and repair records for vehicles and equipment.
  • Attends training courses; reads and studies assigned materials related to operation of City vehicles and equipment maintenance.
  • Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
  • May transport vehicles and equipment as directed.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Modern principles and methods of preventive maintenance and safe work practices and procedures.
  • Modern principles of tools, equipment, and materials used in skilled automotive and equipment maintenance and repair work.
  • Operation and care of internal combustion engines and components.

SKILL IN:

  • Variety of hand and power tools used in the maintenance and repair of automotive and construction equipment.

ABILITY TO:

  • Diagnose and correct automotive equipment problems.
  • Perform the mechanical work involved in operating, maintaining and repairing vehicles, equipment and tools.
  • Establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing with employees and the public.
  • Read and interpret shop and repair manuals, wiring, diagraphs and installation instructions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift weights up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
