Fitness Center Attendant

Non-Exempt|8-10 hours/week|$16/hour

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Fitness Center Attendant helps create a welcoming, safe, clean, and supportive environment for YMCA members using the Fitness Center. This position provides basic equipment orientations, assists members with the proper use of fitness equipment, maintains the cleanliness and organization of the Fitness Center, and provides excellent member service.

The ideal candidate is friendly, dependable, comfortable interacting with people of varying ages and fitness levels, and committed to helping members feel confident and welcome in the Fitness Center.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Member Service & Equipment Orientation

  • Greet members and create a friendly, welcoming environment in the Fitness Center.
  • Provide orientations for members on the safe and proper use of cardio and strength-training equipment.
  • Demonstrate basic equipment adjustments, settings, and safety features.
  • Assist members with general questions regarding Fitness Center equipment and facility procedures.
  • Encourage members to follow posted Fitness Center rules and safety guidelines.
  • Refer questions outside the scope of the position, including individualized exercise programming or medical concerns, to appropriate YMCA staff.
  • Be attentive and available to members who may need assistance while using the Fitness Center.
  • Monitor the Fitness Center and help ensure members are using equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Respond appropriately to incidents and emergencies according to YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Follow all YMCA safety, cleaning, and risk-management procedures.
  • Maintain positive and professional relationships with members, guests, volunteers, and staff.
  • Demonstrate the YMCA's commitment to strengthening community through positive interactions with members.

Cleaning & Facility Care

  • Regularly clean and disinfect fitness equipment, including cardio machines, strength equipment, benches, mats, and other high-touch surfaces.
  • Complete assigned cleaning tasks and maintain established cleaning schedules.
  • Keep equipment, weights, accessories, and other Fitness Center items organized and returned to their appropriate locations.
  • Monitor the Fitness Center for cleanliness, safety concerns, and equipment issues.
  • Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment promptly to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Assist with maintaining an overall clean, organized, and professional appearance throughout the Fitness Center.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Friendly, dependable, and comfortable interacting with members of varying ages, backgrounds, and fitness abilities.
  • Basic knowledge of cardiovascular and strength-training equipment preferred.
  • Previous experience in fitness, recreation, customer service, or a related environment preferred but not required.
  • Ability to learn the safe and proper operation of Fitness Center equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and complete assigned responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication and customer-service skills.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred or ability to obtain certification within a designated period after hire.

  • Stand and walk throughout the Fitness Center for extended periods.
  • Bend, reach, squat, and perform routine cleaning tasks.
  • Move and organize fitness equipment and accessories.
  • Lift and/or move up to 45 pounds.
  • Demonstrate the basic operation and adjustment of cardiovascular and strength-training equipment.
