Electric Motor Technician
Position Summary:
Troubleshoot and repair various electrical mechanical rotating equipment based on your skillset and mechanical aptitude.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Understand and follow all Safety processes and procedures including the use of required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
- Read job cards to determine: Job status, work authorization/limitations, estimate, description of problems and/or work scope.
- Test electro-mechanical rotating equipment to troubleshoot known or suspected problems using various testing methods (AC/DC).
- Disassemble equipment noting parts identification, configuration and condition.
- Ability to operate grinders, drills, cranes, forklift trucks, torches, and cut off saws.
- Clean equipment assemblies as needed through various methods and steps, including but not limited to parts washers, steam cleaners and sand blasters.
- Measure for and note proper replacement parts while correctly submitting a requisition for the needed items.
- Replace or repair worn or defective mechanical or electrical parts and assemblies, included but limited to: Brushes, bearings, brush holders, gears, seals, impellers, mechanical switches, brakes, clutches, tachometers, fans, as required per the ISS technical traveler.
- Test repaired apparatus for proper output and/or operation as per ISS or customer specifications.
- Complete required paperwork for each job accurately and on a timely basis.
Motor types and brand names:
- 3 phase motor.
- DC motors.
- Single phase motors.
- Magnetic clutch units.
- Gearboxes/Transmissions.
- Generators and/or Alternators.
- Compressors and Lobe Blowers.
- Motors - ABB, Baldor/Reliance, Ideal, Louis Allis, Siemens, and US.
- Generators - ABB, Siemens, EMD of GM, and Vestas.
- Gearboxes – Reliance, Cone Drive, and Euro Drive.
- Compressors – Sutor Built, Carrier, and Trane.
Specialized repair and testing equipment:
- Multi-Meter – Used for checking continuity, capacitor testing, diode testing.
- Megohm Meter - Used to test insulation resistance.
- Surge Tester – Used to detect insulation breakdowns between circuits.
- Hi-pot Tester – Used to detect amount of current leakage through insulation.
- Motor Test Panels - Testing apparatus at rated voltages for proper operation before and after repair.
- Balance of various types of rotating equipment including but not limited to fans, rotors, armatures, rolls, impellers, and blowers, using IRD and/or Dynamics balancing machines.
- Keep work area Safe, clean, and organized.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED is required. Trade school, vocational/technical school, military, or on-the-job technician training and/or certifications is preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
