Position Summary:
The Bus Mechanic is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on buses and related equipment to ensure safe, reliable operation. This includes servicing diesel engines, brake systems, electrical systems, HVAC, and drivetrains. The role requires technical skill, attention to safety, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities:
Inspect, maintain, and repair buses, including diesel and gas engines, air brakes, suspension, and steering systems.Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues using diagnostic tools and manuals.Perform preventative maintenance inspections (PMIs) according to schedules and DOT standards.Replace or repair worn or defective parts (e.g., tires, batteries, alternators, hoses, filters).Service HVAC systems, lighting, and passenger equipment.Document all work performed and parts used in maintenance software or logs.Conduct road tests to verify repairs.Ensure compliance with federal and state transportation safety regulations.Keep shop tools and work area clean and organized.Assist with emergency roadside repairs when needed.Requirements:
High school diploma or GED required; vocational/technical training preferred.Minimum 2 years’ experience as a heavy-duty mechanic or bus technician.Valid CDL with passenger and air brake endorsements (or ability to obtain).Familiarity with DOT inspection standards and safety regulations.Proficient with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, and work orders.Must pass pre-employment drug screening and background check.Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.Standing, bending, kneeling, and climbing under or on top of vehicles.Exposure to shop noise, grease, fumes, and weather conditions when working outdoors.Preferred Qualifications:
ASE Certifications in medium/heavy-duty truck or bus repair.Experience with diesel emissions systems (DEF, DPF).Familiarity with fleet maintenance software (e.g., RTA, Fleetio, or similar).The pay range for this role is:25 - 45 USD per hour(Detroit)
