This role sits at the forefront of underwriting innovation, combining deep life underwriting expertise with forward-looking technology and process transformation. You will help shape the future of underwriting by evaluating, testing, and implementing advanced tools, automation, and data-driven solutions that improve risk assessment and customer experience. Working closely with underwriting leadership, actuarial, reinsurance, forensic underwriting, and innovation teams, you will influence both strategy and execution across the policy acquisition ecosystem. This is a highly visible position where your insights directly impact product placement, distribution relationships, and underwriting effectiveness. You will also partner with external vendors and technology providers to identify emerging capabilities and integrate them into production workflows. The environment is fast-paced, collaborative, and highly focused on continuous improvement and digital transformation.

Accountabilities
  • Lead research, evaluation, and implementation of new underwriting tools, technologies, and data sources to advance automation and improve decision-making.
  • Drive innovation in underwriting processes, including pilot programs, testing initiatives, and performance measurement of new solutions.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams including actuarial, reinsurance, forensic underwriting, and operations enablement to identify opportunities for automation and optimization.
  • Support the expansion of instant decisioning and fluidless underwriting programs while balancing risk, pricing assumptions, and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with external vendors, reinsurers, and technology partners to assess emerging capabilities and integrate best-fit solutions.
  • Develop and present strategic recommendations, findings, and multi-year innovation roadmaps to senior and executive leadership.
  • Contribute to the evolution of underwriting frameworks, rules, and future-state digital platforms.
  • Analyze mortality and risk factors, ensuring underwriting decisions align with sound actuarial and business principles.
Requirements

This role requires extensive experience in life underwriting with strong technical judgment, leadership capability, and a passion for innovation in insurance operations. Candidates should bring deep knowledge of underwriting philosophies, risk assessment, and modern data-driven underwriting tools, along with the ability to operate effectively in ambiguous, evolving environments.

  • 7+ years of life underwriting experience with strong expertise across underwriting processes, risk assessment, and decision authority levels.
  • Deep understanding of accelerated, fluidless, and digital underwriting programs, including medical and mortality risk evaluation.
  • Experience working with underwriting data sources, digital health information, and automated underwriting rules engines.
  • Strong familiarity with underwriting tools, AI-enabled platforms, and workflow automation concepts.
  • Proven ability to lead pilots, evaluate new technologies, and implement process improvements at scale.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills with strong attention to detail and risk evaluation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with ability to present to senior and executive leadership.
  • Ability to translate complex underwriting concepts into actionable business and operational insights.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Industry certifications such as LOMA 280/281 and 290/291 required; AALU/FLMI progress or designation preferred.
