Job Summary

Position Purpose: Provides basic and advanced respiratory care to patient(s) as prescribed by LIP according to departmental standards/protocols and practices as well as state and national guidelines established for the Respiratory Care Practioner.(ISRC,AARC)

Essential Functions (list in order of importance including measures)

1. Performs all aspects of routine and advanced Respiratory Care procedures for all age groups, including but not limited to arterial blood gas draws, medical gas therapy, bronchodilator therapy, chest physical therapy, breathing exercise instruction, Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT), and ventilator care and management. 35%

2. Performs all aspects of airway assessment/reassessment, intervention, documentation, and patient family education for patients requiring airway management. Notifies appropriate personnel related to expected outcomes/deviations. Participates in patient core measures which include but is not limited to the following diagnoses: asthma, COPD, CHF, pneumonia, obstructive airway diseases. Contributes to positive patient/staff and physician satisfaction as well as patient health outcomes. 20%

3. Performs all aspects of invasive and noninvasive airway pressure support therapy. Is able to maintain and troubleshoot equipment. 15%

4. Performs all aspects of blood gas sampling and analysis. Quality control, maintenance, troubleshooting, and appropriate charging and documentation of blood gas analyzers. 15%

5. Responds to all Code Blue and rapid response situations, cardiopulmonary monitoring, and EKG(s) cognizant of any adverse reactions and intervene appropriately. Intervens appropriately in an emergency situation(s) according to hospital/department policies. 5%

6. Cleans, sterilizes, and prepares non-disposable equipment. Follows all infection control policies. Stocks emergency/departmental supplies, gases and equipment. 5%

Marginal Functions (list in order of importance)

Ø Performs both essential and marginal job functions in a safe manner as identified by Saint Anthony Hospital and the respective departments while adhering to the Hospital’s confidentiality norms and standards. Actively and consistently demonstrates the core values of Saint Anthony Hospital in all interactions with others.

Ø Assumes responsibility for knowing and maintaining established hospital and departmental objectives, policies/procedures including general sanitation, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

Ø Participates in performance activities including problem identification, data collection, solution selection, implementation and evaluation. Also assists in the care and maintenance of departmental equipment and supplies as appropriate.

Ø Participates in staff meetings and other services, meetings or committees as required.

Ø Act as departmental resource person, assists new staff in departmental orientation, and participates in continuing education while maintaining appropriate certifications

Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate of an approved AMA program for Respiratory Care
  • Licensed by the IDFPR
  • Certified by NBRC
  • CPR, NPR, ACLS, PALS certifications required
  • 1-3 years clinical experience in all aspects of respiratory care, ICU, nursery, general floors, pediatrics and ER
  • Blood Gas Lab skills required. PFT experience is helpful.
  • Able to work in a diversified cultural environment
  • Good interpersonal skills and a positive attitude.
