Job Description

Executive Underwriter

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Executive Underwriter based in the United States.

This is a high-impact opportunity to help build and scale a modern U.S. Excess & Surplus (E&S) Property platform from the ground up.
You will play a pivotal role in developing a profitable portfolio across middle-market and commercial property risks, including critical catastrophe exposures.
The position combines high-volume underwriting with meaningful broker engagement and market-facing responsibilities.
You will evaluate submissions, apply technical and commercial judgment, and make timely decisions on complex and fast-moving opportunities.
Success will depend on balancing analytics, CAT insights, pricing, market intelligence, and disciplined risk selection.
You will also help shape underwriting processes and workflows as the portfolio grows.
The role offers an entrepreneurial, collaborative environment with opportunities to influence the direction of a growing E&S business.

Accountabilities:
  • Drive high-volume production by sourcing, triaging, evaluating, and underwriting a broad flow of E&S Property submissions across varying sizes and levels of complexity.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with wholesale brokers and clients, generating consistent submission flow and expanding key trading partnerships.
  • Manage the full underwriting lifecycle, from initial submission review and prioritization through risk evaluation, pricing, quoting, negotiation, binding, and account authorization within delegated authority.
  • Apply underwriting expertise, CAT insights, exposure analysis, pricing tools, and market intelligence to determine appropriate structures, attachment strategies, terms, and pricing.
  • Maintain a strong market presence through broker meetings, industry events, relationship-building activities, and regular business travel to key trading partners.
  • Balance production objectives with rigorous underwriting discipline, consistently applying appetite, guidelines, risk-selection standards, and portfolio considerations.
  • Establish yourself as a trusted market-facing underwriting partner for E&S Property opportunities, strengthening broker relationships and positioning the business competitively.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of underwriting processes, tools, and workflows that enable speed, efficiency, consistency, and scalability.
  • Support the growth of the underwriting team through onboarding, training, knowledge sharing, and mentoring of new colleagues.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of professional underwriting experience, with the majority of your career focused on E&S Property; experience across primary, excess, shared and layered, and quota share business is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver profitable underwriting results in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge of E&S Property risk drivers, including natural catastrophe exposure, secondary modifiers, construction types, protection features, and regional market dynamics.
  • Understanding of smaller and niche E&S risks, with an appreciation for business models where speed, efficiency, sound judgment, and strong broker relationships are critical to success.
  • Established relationships within the U.S. wholesale broker community, with a track record of developing and expanding trading relationships to generate reliable submission flow.
  • Strong underwriting judgment and the ability to combine objective analytics—including CAT modeling, pricing tools, and exposure metrics—with subjective considerations such as broker quality, account characteristics, and market intelligence.
  • Ability to clearly communicate and defend underwriting decisions, including pricing rationale, attachment strategy, terms, and risk-selection considerations.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage and prioritize a large volume of submissions without compromising quality.
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills, with the confidence to engage brokers constructively while maintaining underwriting discipline.
  • Highly self-directed, dependable, resilient, and capable of making timely decisions in rapidly changing E&S markets.
  • Professional, approachable, and trustworthy, with high integrity in both internal and external interactions.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for broker meetings, industry events, and key market relationships.
  • Candidates located in or near New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Atlanta, or Dallas are preferred, though other U.S.-based candidates may be considered.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary with an annual performance-based target bonus.
  • Hybrid working arrangement with flexibility for eligible candidates.
  • Matching 401(k) plan.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Life and disability insurance.
  • Generous paid time off, including parental leave.
  • Continued support for professional development and career growth.
  • Gym subsidy to support health and wellbeing.
  • Additional personal days through a dedicated “My Day” benefit for personal interests, wellness, or charitable activities.
  • Entrepreneurial, collaborative, and inclusive working environment.
  • Opportunity to help shape and scale a growing E&S Property underwriting platform.
