Job Title: District Substitute Registered Nurse

Salary Range: $40 Per Hour
Job Summary:
The District Substitute Registered Nurse provides health services and nursing care to students and staff on an as-needed basis. This role is essential in maintaining a safe and healthy school environment by assessing and managing student health needs, administering medications, responding to medical emergencies, and ensuring compliance with state health regulations.
This job description outlines the core duties and responsibilities for the position. It is not meant to be an exhaustive list of all tasks that may be required in this role. The ideal candidate should be flexible and adaptable in meeting the evolving needs of the District.
Key Responsibilities:
Collects and assesses information about the health status of students and their families.
Corresponds with parents and guardians regarding students’ health needs and concerns.
Provides medically prescribed interventions, including medication administration, and offers care to ill students.
Maintains confidentiality while documenting health information and notifying parents/guardians or Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as necessary.
Responds to frequently encountered student health issues in accordance with Massachusetts state regulations.
Administers first aid to injured students and staff as needed.
Provides in-service training programs for school staff on first aid, emergency care, and current health issues.
Supports students' development, care, and well-being by fostering positive health practices.
Obtains all necessary standing medication orders from the school physician.
Attends all Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) required trainings to maintain certifications.
Prepares and submits health reports for school officials and DPH as required.
Records and maintains immunizations, health screenings, and other relevant student health data.
Recommends corrective actions when health-related problems are identified.
Performs other Registered Nurse (RN) duties as assigned by school administration or the District Head Nurse .
Qualifications:
Current and valid Massachusetts State License as a Registered Nurse (RN).
Degree from an accredited nursing program.
One year of prior RN experience preferred.
Current CPR (Adult/Child) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification.
Prior experience in a school or camp setting serving students is strongly preferred.
Experience in Pediatric Nursing preferred.
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Experience with electronic medical records and documentation preferred.
Additional Requirements:
Background check and fingerprinting as required by Massachusetts state regulations.
Ability to work in compliance with federal, state, and district policies and regulations.
Completion of any required professional development or certifications as mandated by the District.
Work Environment:
School-based setting with occasional travel for professional development or district meetings.
Requires frequent walking, standing, and occasional lifting of medical supplies or students in emergency situations.
Some travel between classrooms and school buildings may be required.

Compensation and Benefits:
Part-Time Non-Exempt Hourly Position in accordance with the District’s established Per Diem Nurse Hourly Rate. This role is not eligible for benefits.
