Reports To: Director of Student Health Services
Basic Function and Responsibility
- To address students' episodic and preventative health care needs to maximize their physical, mental, and athletic participation in the academic setting. To assist the Director of Student Health Services in the completion of goals. Independent substitution for the Director’s daytime shift (for illness or conferences) may be requested.
Specific Accountabilities
- The following are the general duties:
- Safely and efficiently attend to the health needs of students during both on-duty hours and on-call hours. This requires nursing diagnoses and triage of patients for further care, treatment according to training and Health Center Protocol, independent use of point of care (POC) lab testing supplies and equipment, and constant communication with Huggins Hospital lab, and local physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, and specialists;
- Ability to independently and safely transport medication to the medication room, accurately document and distribute medication to students per state laws and regulations (specifically He-P 816) and school policy.
- Timely communication with parents (including emails after each doctor’s appointment, and phone calls when appropriate).
- Communicate with faculty, administrators, athletic staff, community living parents, and the weekend duty staff to coordinate care and to notify appropriate staff of absences due to health or student status as needed.
- Assist with transportation of students to appointments, to pick up prescriptions, and to the local hospital as needed.
- As appropriate, refer students to the Counseling Center or Director of Health Services to ensure student needs are met.
- Assist with obtaining health forms from parents.
- Competency in using proper nursing documentation in electronic medical records, storage of personal health information, proper use of accident insurance, etc.
- Assist with preparation for doctor appointments, accessing and printing appropriate forms, e-mail reminders to students, sports passes, and proper use of accident reports and insurance information.
- Protect the privacy of students' personal health information and documentation in accordance with NH state laws and regulations.
- Ancillary duties:
- Assist with periodic health-related projects, such as the following:
- Review student health forms
- Update student medical records
- Assist with a school immunization clinic
- Renew state licensure
- Maintenance/cleanliness of HC and equipment
- Attend meetings and workshops to expand nursing skills and knowledge, and to maintain continuing education and nursing license.
- Assist with school programs established to educate students regarding health issues and lifelong skills in self-care.
- Other duties as may be assigned.
This is a non-exempt, per diem position. Benefits include voluntary retirement, fitness center membership, and meals in our dining hall when you are working.
Requirements:Minimum Qualifications:
Registered nurse, current New Hampshire nursing license, current CPR/AED certification for Professional Rescuer, and valid driver’s license. Strong communication and computer skills, ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, and ability to frequently climb stairs. Experience in pediatric, public health, or school nursing is preferred.
