Job Description
The Paraprofessional supports teachers and school staff in providing a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment for students in grades K-8. Working under the supervision of a certificated teacher or site administrator, this role provides academic, behavioral, and classroom support to help students access instruction, build independence, and make progress toward school and individual learning goals. At Excelsior Charter Schools, the Paraprofessional contributes to the mission of preparing students to be successful adults through teamwork, compassion, communication, and a student-centered approach.
Classification: Classified, non-exempt
Work Year: 10–12 months, as assigned
Reports To: Site Administrator, Teacher, or Designee
• Provide individual and small-group instructional support as directed by the supervising teacher.
• Reinforce lessons and learning activities introduced by the teacher in core academic subjects and other assigned areas.
• Assist with classroom organization, preparation of instructional materials, attendance records, and other clerical tasks that support instruction.
• Support students during classroom instruction, transitions, independent work, testing, and school activities.
• Implement accommodations, modifications, behavior supports, and intervention strategies as directed by certificated staff.
• Monitor student behavior and engagement and communicate observations, concerns, and progress to the supervising teacher or administrator.
• Help maintain a positive, respectful, and safe learning environment aligned with school expectations.
• Supervise students in non-instructional settings such as hallways, lunch areas, study sessions, school events, or field trips, as assigned.
• Use basic educational technology, learning platforms, and office tools to support student learning and staff communication.
• Assist with outreach and communication with families when directed by the teacher or administrator.
• Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development as required.
• Maintain confidentiality of student, family, and staff information in accordance with school policies and applicable laws.
• Support the school’s mission, values, and hybrid learning model by working collaboratively with staff, students, and families.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
• Must meet applicable state and local requirements for paraprofessionals, including any required testing, certification, or compliance standards.
• Experience working with adolescents or school-age children in an educational, youth development, or similar setting preferred.
• Ability to follow oral and written directions and implement teacher-developed instructional and behavior plans.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and with varied academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.
• Basic computer proficiency, including email, document tools, and learning management or student information systems.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
• Successful completion of background clearance and any required fingerprinting, TB screening, and mandated trainings.
• Bilingual skills preferred.
