Job Description

Cancer Partners of Nebraska is seeking a full-time Medical Records Specialist. Cancer Partners of Nebraska was established in 1997 and has been serving the Lincoln community and beyond, focusing on personalized treatment plans.

The Medical Records Specialist is responsible for maintaining patient medical records, which includes, obtaining medical information on patients seen in the clinic and distributing requested health information.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain current medical records on all clinic patients
  • Request information from other offices/clinics and hospitals for upcoming patient visits
  • Answer telephone and take requests for medical records or information
  • Distribute medical information to other medical offices, insurance companies, attorney offices and other requesting entities
  • Responsible for obtaining signed medical authorization from patients
  • Maintain patient confidentiality
  • Other projects/responsibilities as assigned periodically by direct supervisor

Education and Training:

  • High School degree or equivalent
  • Preferred successful completion of certified/certificate eligible, post high school two-year Health Information Technology program or equivalent with education, experience and certification
  • Minimum of two years office experience
  • One year of medical records experience

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of customer service concepts and techniques
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, OSHA and other regulatory policies
  • Skill in customer service, communications, problem-solving, organization and confidentiality (HIPAA)
  • Skill in using courteous and professional telephone etiquette
  • Computer keyboarding skills
  • Ability to act in a professional and positive manner when interacting with patients
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in stressful situations
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in person, in writing and on the phone in the English language
  • Ability to establish/maintain effective, cooperative relationships with physicians, staff, patients, and their families

Schedule:

  • Day shift
  • Monday to Friday
  • No nights or weekends

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • Extended periods of sitting during the 8 hour work day
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity
  • Must be able to view computer screens for long periods of time

  • Office/clinic setting
