Position Overview

The Laboratory Intern works under the supervision of the Chief Chemist to support laboratory testing, analysis, and research activities related to cement manufacturing. This position provides hands-on experience with the chemical and physical characterization of raw materials, clinker, and cement while exposing the intern to laboratory instrumentation, analytical methods, quality processes, and materials science within an industrial environment.

What You'll Do

  • Assist with laboratory projects involving the analysis of raw materials, clinker, and cement chemistry.
  • Support the collection, documentation, organization, and entry of laboratory test data.
  • Assist with the chemical and physical characterization of materials using laboratory techniques and instrumentation, including X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and titration methods.
  • Participate in laboratory testing and analysis to evaluate material composition, characteristics, and performance.
  • Assist with pilot grinding experiments and associated chemical and physical characterization of materials.
  • Support the development and evaluation of laboratory testing and analytical methods.
  • Compile and organize test results and other laboratory information to support assigned projects.
  • Work alongside the Chief Chemist and laboratory personnel to learn testing procedures, analytical methods, equipment, and quality practices used in cement manufacturing.
  • Maintain laboratory work areas and equipment in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
  • Follow all Company and plant safety policies, rules, and procedures, as well as applicable MSHA regulations.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

  • Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with laboratory, quality, engineering, and plant personnel.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete assigned tasks accurately.
  • Willingness to learn laboratory instrumentation, analytical techniques, cement chemistry, and materials testing.

Education & Experience

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering, or another related scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Previous laboratory experience or exposure to analytical testing methods is preferred but not required.
  • Coursework or experience related to chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or materials engineering is preferred.

Other Qualifications

  • Interest in chemistry, materials science, laboratory analysis, quality, or cement manufacturing.
  • Exposure to X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), titration, or other analytical laboratory methods is helpful but not required.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a laboratory located within an active industrial environment.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow established laboratory and plant safety practices.
  • Commitment to following all Company safety policies, procedures, and applicable MSHA regulations.
