JOB SUMMARY: The Hotline Crisis Advocate provides advocacy, support, crisis intervention, safety planning and lethality assessments to survivors of domestic violence who call the Harbor House hotline.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Answers hotline during assigned shifts to assess the safety needs of the caller and provide immediate safety planning as necessary:
  • Provide crisis intervention, information and referral.
  • Problem-solves with survivors of domestic violence with appropriate feedback.
  • Assist in the development of current and applicable hotline resources and information.
  • Records and compiles statistical data in agency database on clients and services that will be submitted to the Residential Services Manager.
  • Complete follow-up calls to shelter residents who are exited to assist with any additional resources.
  • Work closely with Harbor House INVEST Advocates, EVE Advocates, Outreach Advocates and Legal Advocates to ensure coordination of services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Extensive knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence
  • Possess a history of successful advocacy on behalf of survivors of domestic violence
  • Ability to provide effective and immediate crisis intervention for clients
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of the services and programs of the Florida domestic violence centers
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with various community agencies, coalitions, and agency staff.
  • Excellent communication and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to provide leadership in a work and community setting.
  • Ability to work with a moderate noise level.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to manage in a manner conductive to high productivity.
  • Ability to work in an environment with many interruptions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently standing, sitting, and walking.
  • Some stooping, lifting and bending.
  • Talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions.

  • Education: Minimum of an undergraduate degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or related field is required.
  • Experience: Minimum of three years relevant experience, preferably in a domestic violence program.
  • Discretion: Professional experience may be substituted for formal education at the discretion of the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Ability to learn organization-specific software, including databases and content management systems. Strong professional writing and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail.
  • Training Requirements: Completion of CORE Competency training within 90 days of hire. Additional mandatory training is required on an annual basis per Agency Policies & Procedures.
