Job Description
At Intramotev, we are building self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles to change the paradigm in freight logistics. We are liberating tons of freight from congested highways, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing transportation efficiency — helping make a 200-year-old industry competitive for the next 200 years. We're committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that's welcoming, respectful, and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth.
We are growing our on-vehicle embedded software team as we scale autonomous rail technology from prototype to fleet. Find your future with us.
Role OverviewWe are seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to join the on-vehicle embedded software team, owning a single embedded device or firmware feature — for example a peripheral driver or a subsystem within our motor-control firmware — from implementation through on-target validation. You'll work on the same real-time surface as our senior embedded engineers: a FreeRTOS real-time system and an embedded-Linux device running across our self-propelled battery-electric railcars, developed within the team's coverage-driven testing and fault-injection discipline. This is a full-time, 100% in-office role based in St. Louis, MO. You'll work within a team of 3–10 engineers and engage in occasional domestic travel for hardware integration, bring-up, and field testing.
Key ResponsibilitiesFirmware Development: Design, implement, and maintain firmware for an owned embedded device or subsystem on FreeRTOS or embedded Linux, in C and C++, following the team's coverage-driven testing and fault-injection discipline.
On-Target Debugging: Debug and validate firmware behavior on real hardware using JTAG/SWD and logic analyzers.
Network Integration: Implement and troubleshoot CAN bus and comparable vehicle-network communication between your owned device and the broader vehicle system.
Testing & Validation: Write unit tests, meet the team's coverage expectations, and verify behavior on target hardware before firmware ships.
Collaboration: Participate in code review and technical guidance from Senior Embedded Software Engineers; use Git in a collaborative branching/PR workflow.
Problem Solving: Take underspecified problems on your owned device, reason about trade-offs, and drive them to a working solution on real hardware.
Base salary: $90,000 - $120,000 plus equity
Intramotev offers a comprehensive benefits package for all team members, including:
Medical coverage: We cover 100% of employee medical premiums, plus low-cost dental and vision options.
Vacation: Full-time employees enjoy unlimited paid time off.
Equity: Full-time employees receive equity in the company.
Parental leave: New parents receive paid time off to spend quality time with their family.
At least a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
2–5 years of professional embedded software experience shipping production firmware.
Strong C and C++ on a real-time RTOS (e.g. FreeRTOS or Zephyr) or embedded Linux.
Experience with on-target debugging — JTAG/SWD or logic analyzers.
Familiarity with CAN bus or comparable vehicle/industrial network protocols.
Disciplined testing practice — writes unit tests, follows coverage expectations, and verifies behavior on target hardware before it ships.
Git in a collaborative workflow (branching, PRs, code review) and comfort working in a Linux command-line environment.
Problem-solving ability — takes an underspecified problem, reasons about trade-offs, and drives it to a working solution on real hardware.
Fluent in both written and verbal English.
Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. No immigration or work-visa sponsorship provided.
Candidate should have a working knowledge of one or (ideally) multiple areas listed below:
Motor-control or vehicle-control firmware experience.
Exposure to functional-safety practices (MISRA C/C++, static analysis, fault injection), even if not on a certified program (ISO 26262 / EN 50128 / EN 50129).
Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test infrastructure experience.
Prior rail, EV, automotive, or unmanned-systems firmware experience.
Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Cursor, Copilot, etc.).
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g. Bachelor and/or Master) and typically 2 or more years' related work experience, or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master + 1 year's related work experience).
RelocationThis position offers relocation based on candidate eligibility.
