Job Description



Performs advanced intelligence gatherings, analysis and dissemination in support of protective operations for state leadership, critical infrastructure and high-risk security environments. Provides law enforcement and protective service functions for the State of South Carolina as determined to be the responsibilities of the BPS as mandated by the South Carolina Code of Laws, Section 23-6-90.

Gathers, analyzes, and evaluates information from a variety of sources, such as law enforcement databases, open sources and public records. Uses intelligence data to prevent criminal acts and terrorism, and to anticipate protest activity leading up to public events. Prepares written reports based on collection and analysis of intelligence data. Collaborates with other law enforcement agencies to share information and to coordinate intelligence activities. Keeps command staff updated on events that could impact the agency.

Conducts criminal investigations and background investigations for applicants considered for employment. Manages caseloads and prepares status reports. Prepares written statements and obtains signed affidavits from suspects, victims and witnesses to crimes as deemed necessary. Keeps the supervisor, prosecutors and other law enforcement officials and/or the public abreast of case statuses.

Conducts intelligence collection, analysis and reporting to support BPS protective missions, threat assessments, risk mitigation and situational awareness. Develops, maintains and disseminates intelligence products including the following: written reports, briefings, dashboards and alerts to senior leadership and operational units.

Collaborates with federal, state and local law-enforcement, intelligence, and public-safety agencies to share information and coordinates investigations or protective operations. Monitors open-source, law-enforcement, and classified data streams, identify emerging threats, trends or vulnerabilities, and proposes actionable countermeasures.

Supports protective operations planning (e.g., executive protection, critical-infrastructure security, special events) by providing intelligence-based recommendations. Maintains full law-enforcement readiness to include patrol, response, arrests, investigations, report writing, testimony, and other duties as necessary.


State Minimum Qualifications: A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience.

Must complete the basic law enforcement certification through the SC Criminal Justice Academy and must be able to perform all essential job functions of a law enforcement division.

Individual will have general, but limited supervision, but must be able to work independently and perform complex duties requiring good judgment.

Must posses effective written and verbal communication skills.

Must be physically able to lift, bend and stand for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to restrain individuals who may pose a threat to the Governor and other public officials, state employees, and the general public. This individual must also be able to perform these duties under all weather conditions.


Individual must have the ability to exercise professional discretion and work professionally with non-law enforcement personnel within working environment.
