Director of Nursing (DON) – Position Summary
The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for overseeing the clinical operations of the Skilled Nursing Facility at Legacy Pointe at UCF, ensuring residents receive high-quality, person-centered care in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. The DON provides leadership to nursing staff, promotes clinical excellence, and supports a culture of dignity, compassion, accountability, and service excellence.
Responsibilities include maintaining compliance with CMS, AHCA, OSHA, and HIPAA requirements, overseeing nursing policies and procedures, reviewing clinical documentation, coordinating resident care plans, and maintaining survey readiness. The DON also oversees admissions and discharges, participates in Medicare coverage meetings, addresses resident and family concerns, and leads investigations and corrective actions related to clinical incidents.
The DON supervises the Assistant Director of Nursing, nurses, and Certified Nursing Assistants, overseeing staffing, scheduling, training, performance evaluations, and employee development. This position works closely with Human Resources and department leadership to maintain appropriate staffing levels, support employee engagement, and ensure nursing staff are properly trained and equipped to provide quality care.
Additional responsibilities include managing the nursing department budget, overseeing supplies and equipment, participating in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI), Infection Control, and Safety initiatives, and providing leadership during emergencies. The DON serves as a clinical resource and role model, promoting resident safety, positive clinical outcomes, and a professional, supportive nursing environment.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Florida required
- Minimum of an Associate's Degree in Nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
- Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience in Skilled Nursing, Long-Term Care, or Acute Care required
- Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory or managerial experience in a healthcare setting required
- Strong knowledge of CMS, AHCA, OSHA, HIPAA, infection control standards, and healthcare regulatory requirements
- Experience with regulatory surveys, clinical audits, plans of correction, and maintaining survey readiness
- Knowledge of nursing standards, resident assessments, individualized care plans, medication administration, and clinical documentation
- Experience coordinating resident admissions, discharges, Medicare skilled coverage, and interdisciplinary care
- Ability to investigate clinical incidents, address resident and family concerns, and implement appropriate corrective actions
- Experience participating in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI), Infection Control, and Safety initiatives
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to recruit, supervise, train, coach, evaluate, and develop nursing personnel
- Experience managing nursing schedules, staffing levels, employee performance, and clinical competency programs
- Ability to manage departmental budgets, supplies, equipment, and operational resources
- Strong clinical judgment, critical-thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, conflict resolution, and organizational skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, nursing staff, residents, families, and interdisciplinary team members
- Proficiency in electronic medical record (EMR) systems, including PointClickCare, Microsoft Office, and healthcare scheduling systems
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and ensure compliance with resident rights and privacy requirements
- Ability to respond effectively to emergencies, changing clinical priorities, and staffing needs
- Must demonstrate a professional, compassionate, and resident-centered approach while promoting teamwork and employee engagement
