Lead Driver- Truckee CA
Duties include operating Diesel Direct fuel delivery vehicles with a focus on safety and customer courtesy; performing daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections; fueling the vehicles; preparing trip reports; preparing accident and incident reports as necessary.The Lead Driver serves as the on-site supervisor and primary point of contact for the driver team. This role is responsible for supporting daily operations, ensuring efficient workflow, and maintaining high performance standards across both driving and warehouse functions.
Essential Duties:
- Be the go to guy for the drivers
- Know the customers, the stops, the windows
- Have a thorough knowledge of the handhelds and be able to get one up and running for the driver.
- Be a leader be the one that sets the example, communicate with the drivers
- Always carry that nights rec sheets with you
- Train new hires
- Be ready to respond to an accident or a spill
- Operates assigned vehicle in a safe and courteous manner
- Delivers fuel per customer time and delivery requirements
- Fuels vehicle(s) at various locations recording the fuel dispensed into each unit electronically or using a fuel service breakdown sheet
- Maintains accurate, up-to-date records on trip sheets, customer, vehicle maintenance, fuel purchases (BOL), incident reports, accident reports, vehicle condition reports and other records that are requested from management
- Works safely adhering to all company policy and practices while loading and unloading company vehicles
- Maintains defensive driving
- Provides a communication link between customers and staff
- Reads and interprets maps and driving directions to plan the most efficient route service for customers, and reads and interprets road signs in English
- Keeps the assigned vehicle(s) clean inside and outside
- Reports immediately any accident, fuel spill or medical emergencies to your supervisor
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to drive multiple vehicles safely and appropriately, including ability to read and interpret road signs in English;
- Ability to be detail oriented and be able to prioritize;
- Ability to read, understand, and adhere to the rules and regulations of the Federal Department of Transportation;
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to establish effective professional relationships with customers, co-workers, and upper level staff and employees;
- Ability to prepare concise and accurate records and reports; extensive knowledge of the operations and features of assigned vehicle(s);
- Ability to recognize vehicle maintenance needs; ability to interpret policies and procedures, maps, and route directions. Overtime sometimes required.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
Key responsibilities include:
- Acting as the on-site supervisor, providing leadership, guidance, and support to drivers and staff
- Assisting with warehousing operations, including key responsibilities as needed
- Supporting route coverage and deliveries to ensure service levels are met
- Training, coaching, and developing drivers to maintain safety and performance standards
- Assisting in any operational area as directed by the Operations Manager
- Monitoring and overseeing daily activities of on-site staff to ensure productivity and compliance
- Helping resolve issues, coordinate tasks, and maintain smooth day-to-day operations
The Lead Driver is expected to be flexible, hands-on, and proactive, stepping in wherever needed to support the team and ensure operational success.
