Job Title: Quality Engineer – Failure Analysis & Reliability

Location: Phoenix, AZ

Reports to: Quality Manager

Department: Indirect

Position Summary

The Quality Engineer plays a critical role in driving product reliability and process improvement. This position is responsible for conducting deep-dive root cause analyses of both field-returned (RMA) and in-house failed units. By identifying failure modes, this role develops and implements corrective actions and updates all process documentation to ensure a high standard of quality and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

1. Failure Analysis (FA) & Technical Investigation

  • Field Returns (Autopsies): Identify and perform autopsies on field-returned units to determine specific root cause(s) of failure, such as component fatigue or installation error.
  • Internal Failure Analysis: Investigate units that fail internal testing or end-of-line checks to drive resolution and prevent reoccurrence.
  • Containment & Countermeasures: Lead the development and implementation of containment strategies, countermeasures, and corrective initiatives.
  • Technical Support: Support the design and implementation of fixtures, instrumentation, and specialized test methods as needed.

2. Process Optimization & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Documentation & SOPs: Own the creation and updating of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and related process documentation based on failure findings.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with engineering, production, and supply chain teams to resolve quality issues and drive continuous improvement.
  • Communication: Clearly communicate quality findings and improvement initiatives across departments to achieve company-wide performance targets.

3. Data Analytics

  • Trend Analysis: Perform data analysis to identify trends and areas for process improvement.
  • Effectiveness Tracking: Monitor and report on the effectiveness of corrective actions over time.
  • Visualization: Utilize data manipulation and visualization tools to present quality performance to leadership.

  • Experience: Familiarity with mechanical engineering and manufacturing environments, specifically automotive quality.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) or higher in Mechanical, Automotive, or Process Engineering.
  • Technical Knowledge: Fundamental understanding of mechanical systems, such as gear trains, hydraulics, or rotating machinery.
  • Software Literacy: Comfortable using Excel for calculations, data manipulation, and creating data visualizations.
  • Track Record: Previous experience creating SOPs and managing quality documentation in a professional setting.
