Job Description

Associate Business Manager

Tucson Geo | Full-Time | In-Person Office Position

About Alta E&I

Alta Environmental & Infrastructure is one of Arizona’s fastest-growing engineering firms, with nearly 250 employees across the state. We’re 100% Arizona owned and managed, which means you’ll never feel like a number here. Our team delivers a full spectrum of services - civil engineering, surveying, geotechnical and materials testing, environmental, and EHS - giving you exposure to many paths and projects.

Alta is big enough to offer opportunities, and advanced technology - yet small enough that you’ll know your team, see your impact, and have leadership that knows you.

We’re proud to be a trusted partner to some of the nation’s largest corporations, developers, and public agencies - helping to build the future, while also protecting it through environmental stewardship and sustainable solutions.

Position Overview

The Associate Business Manager will serve as an operational partner to Alta’s Tucson leadership and project managers. This role is built for someone who likes numbers, processes, people, and problem-solving, and who wants to learn how a technical business actually runs from the inside. You will help maintain project data, support financial reviews, assist with invoicing and WIP, improve dashboards, coordinate with Accounting and HR, and help leaders make timely, data-informed decisions.

This is not a traditional administrative role. It is a growth-track business management position for someone who wants hands-on exposure to project operations, profitability, forecasting, contracts, billing, team support, and the systems that keep a fast-moving engineering office performing well.

What You’ll Do

  • Project operations: Coordinate project setup, maintain clean project data, monitor documentation, support project closeout, and help project managers stay organized and informed.
  • Financial management: Review project budgets, fee structures, burn rates, WIP, profitability, labor utilization, revenue trends, and performance against budget.
  • Invoicing and revenue support: Review invoices before submission, help resolve billing issues, identify change order opportunities, reduce aging WIP, and support timely revenue capture.
  • Dashboards and reporting: Build and maintain customized dashboards, KPIs, and business analysis that help managers understand job profitability, margins by job type, return on assets, workload, and financial projections.
  • Contracts and administration: Assist with contract review, purchase orders, subcontract agreements, certificates of insurance, vendor setup, billing requirements, and project records.
  • People and culture support: Partner with leadership and HR to support onboarding, professional development plans, mentoring, performance review coordination, and a strong team culture.
  • Process improvement: Identify workflow inefficiencies, standardize procedures, support company initiatives, and help reduce nonbillable leadership time.
  • Business development support: Help maintain customer information, support client strategy, and assist with data and follow-up that strengthen customer relationships.

Who We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone early in their business career who is curious, driven, organized, and ready to grow. The ideal candidate is comfortable working with details, asking good questions, learning new systems, and turning information into action. You do not need to know every system on day one, but you should be excited to master new tools, understand how projects make money, and become a trusted resource for managers and leadership.

  • 3–6 years of related experience in business operations, finance, project administration, accounting support, HR coordination, construction/engineering administration, or a similar field preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of ownership.
  • Comfort working with numbers, reports, budgets, and project data.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with project managers, technical staff, accounting, HR, and leadership.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel; experience with project management, accounting, dashboard, or CRM platforms is a plus.
  • Ability to prioritize, follow through, and stay organized in a fast-paced environment.
  • A growth mindset, professional curiosity, and interest in developing into a broader business management role.

Training and Growth Path

You will not be dropped into the role without support. The first 90 days are designed to help you build confidence, learn the business, and grow into the Tucson team’s go-to operational partner.

  • Weeks 1–2: Hands-on orientation, shadowing, and training with the Phoenix Business Manager and finance/admin team. You will learn Alta’s structure, Geo workflows, project lifecycle, BigTime, financial reporting, invoicing, contracts, proposals, WIP, and dashboard tools.
  • Weeks 3–4: Guided practice with project setups, invoice support, PM meetings, WIP reviews, budget discussions, change orders, and reporting. You will also spend time in Phoenix to strengthen alignment with existing operations.
  • Month 2: Begin independently handling project setup, invoice review, WIP meetings, budget monitoring, PM support, contract administration, and financial reporting with weekly check-ins.
  • Month 3: Operate as the primary Associate Business Manager resource for Tucson Geo by leading WIP reviews, financial discussions, process improvements, PM support, revenue tracking, forecast discussions, and issue resolution.

Career Development

This role is designed for someone who wants to build a management style, mature their analytical skills, and grow into a business partner who understands finance, operations, people, systems, and client strategy. Alta encourages professional development through mentoring, continuing education, leadership exposure, and professional organizations such as SHRM, AMA, APM, AFP, APBM, AOM, and IIC. High performers may also become eligible for performance bonus opportunities as they progress in their career.
