Job Description

Description:

The STEM Alliance is a Westchester-based nonprofit and our vibrant team is always expanding its vision, work and reach. We are seeking an engaging candidate to join our collaborative environment and help with all sorts of hands-on programmatic work. Our STEM Education team provides informal Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education from preschool through adults with a focus on reaching underserved populations through afterschool programs, festivals, summer programs, family events, our STEM Quest Mobile Learning Lab and more.

As a Program Associate on our STEM Education team, you will play a central role in the launch and ongoing operation of our newest site: The Marine Education Center at Harbor Island Park, a treasured community institution on the Long Island Sound in Mamaroneck, owned by the Village of Mamaroneck and now operated by The STEM Alliance. This role does not require teacher certification and offers a variety of room to learn and grow. Beyond certified educators, we're looking for lifelong learners who are passionate and curious.

What you’ll be doing

The responsibilities of this role can be tweaked depending on the talents of the right candidate and the needs of our team. Having said that, it’s likely that you’ll be doing some of the things below, together with our Programs Team:

  • Lead engaging, inquiry-based STEM and marine science programs for school field trips, after-school groups, summer camps, and the general public — from preschool through adult audiences
  • Deliver outreach programs directly in classrooms and partner sites across Westchester County, bringing the Long Island Sound into schools that can’t always come to us
  • Collaborate with a professional tank care vendor to follow all New York State compliance rules need to maintain and care for the Center’s aquariums, touch tank and living exhibits, including animals native to the Long Island Sound
  • Support the design, development and continuous improvement of curriculum covering topics such as marine ecology, animal adaptations, water cycles, climate change, wetland ecology, invertebrate biology and acoustics
  • Facilitate programs for community and civic groups, scout troops, summer camps and private events
  • Assist with daily operations of the Center including welcoming visitors, maintaining exhibits, supporting general programming logistics and maintain data collection for programming outputs and outcomes
  • Partner with other community groups and nonprofits on community outreach events, beach cleanups and special seasonal programming such as the Fish Hut Festival
  • Serve as an Enrichment Educator with the STEM team providing various educational programs as part of the broader organizational mission
  • Participate fully in all Programs Team trainings and meetings to ensure all work reflects our quality standards, achieves the highest levels of current, applied science and meets the needs of diverse learners
Requirements:

What you bring

First and foremost, we are looking for someone who is warm, friendly and values teamwork. We would hope that you are looking to expand your personal and professional goals. Also significant is that you have a desire to serve others and learn how STEM education and Digital Equity are creating a ladder of opportunity for all. Lastly, we would need you to be able to complete tasks independently and in a timely manner with some guidance.

Besides that you might:

PROGRAMS:

  • Have a background in biology, environmental science, marine science, education or a related field
  • Have experience working with children or youth in informal or formal educational settings
  • Speak Spanish
  • Have experience with the Google Workspace platform
  • Consider yourself technologically savvy
  • Seek a job where you can make a difference in the lives of people and the community
  • Prefer a work environment of employees that enjoy each other’s time and company

Are you excited? So are we!

  • Apply today to play an active role in changing our world for the better by connecting people of all ages with the living marine environment right in their backyard — and helping build the next generation of curious, informed stewards of the Long Island Sound.
  • If you’re enthusiastic about our mission, we’d love to hear from you!

And please note:

  • Research shows that while men apply to jobs if they meet about 60% of the criteria, women and those in traditionally underrepresented groups tend to apply only if they check all the boxes. If you think you have what it takes but don’t meet every single point above, please still apply! We’d like to learn more about you to see if you could be a great fit.
  • We value the diversity of our colleagues. People with disabilities are currently underrepresented in our company and underserved in our community. We want to change that. For this reason, we subscribe to equal employment opportunity principles and strongly encourage people living with disabilities to apply. We will support you in the working environment.
