Job Description

Produce Specialist IISummary

The Produce Specialist II supports the procurement, inventory management, and quality assurance functions for the produce category to help ensure customers consistently receive high-quality, fresh products. This role assists in controlling costs, minimizing waste, maintaining food safety standards, and supporting operational efficiency. The position also provides valuable exposure to purchasing and category management processes, creating opportunities for long-term growth within the produce and procurement departments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support procurement and purchasing activities for the produce category, including vendor communication, order management, and maintaining positive supplier relationships.
  • Monitor inventory performance metrics such as turns, fill rates, spoilage, and shrink; use reporting, forecasting, and analytics to optimize inventory levels and reduce waste.
  • Perform quality assurance checks on incoming and stored produce to ensure freshness, proper rotation (FIFO), storage compliance, and adherence to food safety standards.
  • Assist with logistics coordination and direct purchase management to support timely deliveries and operational efficiency.
  • Partner with the sales team to provide product knowledge, recommendations, samples, training, and promotional support tailored to customer needs.
  • Assist in the development and execution of category initiatives, promotional programs, and customer business reviews to support sales growth.
  • Communicate effectively with internal departments, customers, and suppliers to resolve issues and support company objectives.
  • Stay informed on produce market trends, seasonality, emerging products, and industry developments to help strengthen product offerings and competitiveness.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in business, agriculture, supply chain management, or a related field preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • 1–3 years of experience in produce, foodservice distribution, retail produce, purchasing, or a related field strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel for reporting and data analysis.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Working knowledge of produce quality standards, seasonality, inventory management, and food safety practices preferred.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements
  • Primarily office-based with occasional warehouse walkthroughs, including refrigerated (34°F) and freezer (0°F) environments.
  • Frequent use of computers, telephones, and standard office equipment.
  • Ability to stand and walk for short periods on concrete warehouse floors.
  • Ability to occasionally lift, carry, and move items weighing up to 30–40 pounds.
