About This Position

Description:

The Director of Indirect Tax is responsible for the strategic oversight and execution of the company’s indirect tax function across all jurisdictions. This role manages the outsourced compliance and reporting processes for sales and use tax, property tax, and business licenses, and serves as the primary lead for all indirect tax audits. The Director acts as the key liaison between internal stakeholders and external service providers, ensuring compliance, accuracy, risk mitigation, and process efficiency across all indirect tax areas.

Key Responsibilities

Sales & Use Tax

  • Oversee the end-to-end outsourced sales and use tax compliance process, including data validation, return filings, payments, and reconciliations.
  • Manage third-party service providers to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant filings across all jurisdictions.
  • Review and approve tax positions, exemptions, taxability determinations, and system configurations.
  • Partner with internal teams (Finance, IT, Operations, Legal) to support transactions, system changes, and acquisitions impacting sales and use tax.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory changes and assess impacts to the business.

Property Tax

  • Provide executive oversight of the outsourced property tax function, including compliance, renditions, assessments, and payments.
  • Manage relationships with external property tax providers and advisors.
  • Review valuations, assess risks, and oversee appeals and abatements where appropriate.
  • Coordinate property tax matters related to acquisitions, dispositions, and restructurings.

Business Licenses

  • Oversee the business license compliance process, ensuring all required licenses and registrations are obtained, renewed, and maintained
  • Ensure alignment between legal entity structure, operational footprint, and licensing requirements.

Audits & Controversy

  • Serve as the primary lead for all indirect tax audits, including sales and use tax, property tax, and business license audits.
  • Coordinate audit responses with external providers and internal stakeholders.
  • Review audit findings, negotiate settlements, and manage resolution strategies to minimize financial and operational risk.
  • Identify root causes of audit issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Strategy, Governance & Leadership
  • Develop and implement indirect tax strategies, policies, and internal controls.
  • Evaluate and enhance outsourced processes for efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
  • Provide indirect tax guidance and training to internal teams.
  • Prepare and present indirect tax updates, risks, and KPIs to senior leadership.
  • Support due diligence and integration activities for mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures.
  • Ensure strong documentation, procedural governance, and audit readiness.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Manage the work of others, including planning, assigning, scheduling, and reviewing work, ensuring quality standards. Responsible for hiring, terminating, training and developing, reviewing performance, and administering corrective action for staff.
Requirements:

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s degree or CPA preferred).
  • CMI tax certificate for sales tax and/or property tax.
  • 10+ years of progressive indirect tax experience, including sales and use tax and property tax.
  • Strong audit management and controversy experience across multiple jurisdictions.
  • In-depth knowledge of U.S. state and local tax regulations.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience with indirect tax systems and data extraction tools (e.g., ERP and tax engines).
  • Ability to operate independently while collaborating cross-functionally.

Essential Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Work is primarily sedentary: must be able to sit for extended periods of time and use a computer, keyboard, and mouse frequently.
  • Travel may be required periodically, including overnight stays (contingent on position requirements).
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
