POSITION SUMMARY:
The Chief Medical Dosimetrist provides clinical, technical, and administrative leadership for the dosimetry program. This role oversees treatment planning quality, workflow optimization, staff supervision, and standardization of dosimetrist practices to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. The Chief Dosimetrist works closely with Medical Physics, Radiation Oncologists, and Radiation Therapists to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards while advancing clinical excellence.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides clinical, technical and administrative leadership for the dosimetry program, including oversight of treatment planning quality, workflow optimization, and standardization of dosimetry practices.
- Supervise, mentor and support dosimetry staff, including training, performance oversight and professional development.
- Develop and deliver high-quality 2D, 3D-CRT, IMRT, VMAT, SRS, and SBRT treatment plans in accordance with physician prescriptions, ensuring prescribed dose coverage while protecting dose-limiting structures.
- Collaborates with radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiation therapists, and leadership on target delineation, treatment planning, plan review, and approval processes using advanced imaging and fusion techniques (CT, MRI, PET-CT radiographs). Ensures accurate implementation of treatment plans, including documentation, data transfer and communication with therapy staff for consistent patient setup.
- Upholds a strong commitment to quality, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and patient-centered care.
- Perform and/or oversee dose verification, in-vivo dosimetry, and treatment plan validation as required.
- Maintain compliance with radiation safety standards, regulatory requirements, and accreditation guidelines (e.g., American College of Radiology, ASTRO APEx).
- Lead or participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities, including chart rounds, peer review, and QA committees.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of departmental policies, procedures, and clinical standards.
- Promote effective interdisciplinary communication and collaboration to support patient care and operational efficiency.
- Maintain current knowledge of advancements in medical dosimetry and support the implementation of new techniques, technologies, or evidence-based practices as appropriate.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree from accredited four (4) year medical dosimetry program.
- Required: Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or an accredited radiation therapy technology program (with certification in radiation therapy technology), supplemented by successful completion of a dosimetry training program. On-the-job training for a period of two (2) years may be substituted for formal dosimetry training.
- Required: Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD) by the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board (MDCB)
- Minimum seven (7) years of experience in Medical Dosimetry required.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION:
- Board Certified by the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board (Certified Medical Dosimetrist) upon hire
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OR ABILITIES:
- Proficiency with treatment planning systems and oncology information systems (e.g., Eclipse/ARIA or equivalent).
- Skilled in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
- General IT Network & Security knowledge.
- Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience in a clinical setting.
- Strong Communication and Interpersonal Skills.
