The Rental Service Manager is responsible for overseeing all service operations related to the rental generator fleet, including supervisory duties, service planning, and quality control. This role manages the inspection, maintenance, repair, and deployment of power generation equipment for the Rental Department at customer job sites and in the warehouse. Equipment includes diesel and natural gas generators ranging from 20 kW up to 3000 kW, as well as associated power distribution equipment. Manufacturers serviced include Caterpillar, Cummins, Kohler, Generac, Multiquip, and Olympian, among others.
Essential Duties:
Management
- Schedules all weekly field and warehouse work for technicians/warehouse team to ensure work is prioritized accordance with customer’s needs as well as departmental efficiency.
- Conducts monthly one-on-one meetings with direct reports and holds regular team meetings to communicate priorities, address challenges, and drive continuous improvement in service operations.
- Develops and maintains an on-call schedule for the technicians to respond to all rentals and service customer call outs.
- Approves maintenance and repair quotes for customers.
Generator Service Operations
- Oversees the inspection, service, and repair of rental generators (diesel and natural gas, 20 kW – 3000 kW) to ensure fleet readiness and reliability.
- Directs technicians in troubleshooting and resolving generator faults, including engine, alternator, and control panel issues for all major manufacturers (Caterpillar, Cummins, Kohler, Generac, etc.).
- Manages the preventive maintenance program for the entire rental generator fleet, ensuring all PM schedules are completed on time and documented accurately.
- Coordinates load testing, and commissioning of generators prior to customer deployment to ensure units meet performance specifications.
- Oversees proper equipment tagging, condition documentation, and placement of units in the ready line following service or return from rental.
- Coordinates with Rental Coordinators to ensure generators and associated distribution equipment are properly staged, transported, and set up at customer locations.
- Supports fuel management, coolant, and fluid checks as part of ongoing fleet maintenance to minimize unplanned downtime for rental customers.
- Properly tags all equipment prior to placing in the ready line.
Service Quality & Compliance
- Maintains service records, equipment condition reports, work orders, and inspection logs in a timely, accurate, and legible manner with sufficient detail to support accounting and fleet management needs.
- Provides on-call generator service support to technicians and customers on a 24x7x365 basis, responding to emergency power failures and critical service calls as needed.
- Monitors generator service quality standards; reviews completed work orders and performs periodic spot inspections to ensure technician output meets WPP quality expectations.
- Builds and maintains strong customer relationships by proactively communicating service status, managing expectations around repair timelines, and ensuring generator uptime meets or exceeds customer requirements.
- Enforces adherence to company service standards, manufacturer maintenance guidelines, and all applicable regulatory requirements across the service team.
- Prepares and reviews service reports, fleet utilization summaries, and generator performance records to support management decision-making and continuous improvement initiatives.
Safety
- Works in a neat, orderly, and safe manner, constantly seeking to improve methods and promote the safety of others.
- Complies with all company safety, health, and environmental policies to ensure a safe work environment.
- Reports all recognized unsafe conditions or acts to Management.
- Wears proper PPE when necessary.
Additional Responsibilities
- Attends training sessions as required.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
- Supervise and direct the selection, training, development, appraisal, and work assignments of personnel in the Rental Team, approximately 7 employees are direct reports.
- Team Lead - Provide limited supervision to others through motivation, direction, review, and feedback of assigned tasks.
EXPERIENCE:
- Five or more years’ experience in generator service or power generation, with at least two years in a supervisory or lead technician role, preferably in an equipment rental, industrial service, or power generation environment.
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve complex generator faults across diesel and natural gas platforms, including engine systems, alternators, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and control panels from multiple manufacturers.
- Working knowledge of generator control systems, paralleling switchgear, load bank testing procedures, and power distribution configurations used in rental and temporary power applications.
EDUCATION:
- High school diploma or GED or equivalent years of relevant experience and/or training
- Graduation from Technician/Maintenance training program preferred
- Current valid Texas driver's license
