POSITION SUMMARY

The Registered Neurodiagnostic Technologist I performs neurodiagnostic procedures including routine EEGs, STAT EEGs, and long-term monitoring (LTM/EMU) hook-ups in accordance with departmental protocols, validated competencies, and national standards.

This role provides high-reliability, flexible staffing support across inpatient and outpatient environments, including high-acuity settings.

The technologist functions with a high degree of technical skill, clinical judgment, and professional accountability under a competency-based supervision model aligned with ASET and ABRET standards.

Core Responsibilities

  • Perform routine EEG studies according to departmental protocols and validated competencies
  • Respond to and complete STAT EEG requests within defined time, quality, and safety standards
  • Perform LTM/EMU hook-ups including electrode application, securement, patient education, and documentation
  • Ensure patient safety, infection prevention, skin integrity assessment, and seizure precautions
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and correct technical artifacts within scope of practice
  • Accurately document procedures, events, technical observations, and communications
  • Communicate effectively with nursing staff, providers, supervising technologists, and neuroscience leadership
  • Escalate clinical, technical, or safety concerns per departmental policy
  • Maintain required competencies and participate in ongoing education
  • Work under the direction of a credentialed Neurodiagnostic Technologist
  • Complete annual competency validation

  • Routine EEGs

  • Float coverage limited to modalities with validated competencies

Accountabilities and Expectations

Clinical Judgment, Patient Safety, and Escalation

  • Demonstrates advanced situational awareness across inpatient, outpatient, and high-acuity environments
  • Applies patient identification, time-out, infection prevention, and safety protocols
  • Anticipates and mitigates risks related to seizures, altered mental status, and skin integrity
  • Recognizes changes in patient condition and initiates timely escalation
  • Identifies clinically significant EEG abnormalities within scope of practice
  • Communicates proactively with the Medical Director of the Neuroscience Department or designee regarding concerning findings
  • Collaborates with nursing and providers to route patients to the appropriate level of care
  • Maintains effectiveness during emergent or time-sensitive EEG requests
  • Documents abnormalities, escalations, and communications according to standards

Technical Expertise and Signal Integrity

  • Executes neurodiagnostic procedures with high technical accuracy
  • Applies electrodes using accepted national standards
  • Identifies and resolves common and complex EEG artifacts
  • Maintains signal quality appropriate for physician interpretation
  • Ensures accurate labeling and secure handling of EEG data

Modality-Specific Performance Expectations

Routine EEG

  • Performs complete studies end-to-end
  • Documents patient state, events, and technical observations
  • Adapts technique to patient limitations

STAT EEG

  • Responds rapidly in time-sensitive scenarios
  • Performs studies in ICU, ED, and other high-acuity settings
  • Escalates urgent findings per protocol

LTM and EMU Hook-Ups

  • Applies electrodes suitable for prolonged monitoring
  • Educates patients and families on event reporting and safety
  • Ensures effective handoff to monitoring staff

Autonomy, Supervision, and Professional Judgment

  • Functions independently within validated competencies
  • Demonstrates sound judgment regarding consultation and escalation
  • Communicates concerns impacting patient safety or workflow
  • Serves as a clinical extension of Neuroscience leadership
  • Provides reliable PRN coverage across shifts and acuity levels

Professional Accountability and Reliability

  • Demonstrates professionalism, adaptability, and accountability
  • Maintains readiness for short-notice staffing needs
  • Completes annual competency validation
  • Participates in quality and performance improvement initiatives
  • Progresses along the ASET-aligned career pathway when applicable


WORK ENVIRONMENT

Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and potential injury.

This position requires standing and walking a majority of the time. This position requires the ability to push and pull patients that are moderately heavy to heavy on equipment on wheels a majority of the time.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • EDUCATION: Associate degree in Neuroscience or related health science required upon hire or transfer.


  • LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: American Heart Association BLS required upon hire or transferDegree from CAAHEP-accredited Neurodiagnostic Technology program. ABRET credential (R.EEGT) required upon hire or transfer.


EXPERIENCE: The Electroneurodiagnostic Registered Technician performs specific testing based on the standards set forth of by the National Society of Neurodiagnostics. Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

Demonstrates the competencies as established on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool for this position.
