MEAT DEPARTMENT MANAGER IN TRAINING

Reports to: Store Director

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY

The Meat Department Manager in Training role is designed to develop high-potential team members for future Meat Department Manager positions. Under the guidance of the Meat Department Manager and Store Leadership, this role focuses on building leadership skills, technical meat knowledge, merchandising execution, food safety compliance, and financial accountability. The Meat Department Manager in Training will learn to oversee daily meat department operations, manage inventory, ensure product quality, and deliver excellent customer service while supporting team leadership. This role prepares individuals to operate a safe, efficient, and profitable meat department that maximizes sales, minimizes waste, and consistently meets customer expectations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Learn and execute daily meat department operations, including opening and closing procedures, workflow execution, production planning, and case readiness under the direction of the Meat Department Manager and Store Leadership.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and food-safe work areas while ensuring product freshness, proper rotation, accurate labeling, and adherence to all food safety, sanitation, and handling standards, including temperature control, FIFO practices, and regulatory compliance.
  • Execute company merchandising standards, including case layout, promotional features, end caps, secondary placements, and seasonal displays to create full, visually appealing cases that drive sales and customer engagement.
  • Learn inventory management and ordering processes, including receiving, production planning, shrink control, and waste reduction to support department profitability.
  • Demonstrate leadership through professionalism, strong work ethic, and positive customer interactions; assist with training, coaching, scheduling fundamentals, and labor efficiency while supporting a high-performing team culture.
  • Deliver knowledgeable and responsive customer service by assisting with product selection, answering questions related to meat cuts and preparation, and resolving customer concerns professionally.
  • Complete all required management training and development activities, actively apply coaching and feedback, and demonstrate consistent progress toward Meat Department Manager competencies and readiness for increased responsibility.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Previous supervisory experience in a meat department, butcher shop or similar environment is preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of inventory management, ordering, and product rotation.
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to handle customer requests and concerns professionally.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications and software.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is typically performed in a grocery store environment with frequent exposure to refrigerated areas and freezers
  • Exposure to sharp equipment requiring high attention to safety
  • Fast-paced environment especially during peak shopping hours
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule including a variety of shifts, days, evenings, nights, and weekends including overtime, as needed

  • Must be able to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time

  • Manual dexterity required for cutting, slicing and operating equipment
  • Ability to use hands and fingers to reach, lift and carry 50 pounds on a regular basis
  • Ability to speak to, hear, and understand others via phone and in person in English
